🚘 BP Vito Fossella issued the following statement regarding the City ending its pursuit of #UniversalDaylighting :
“Finally, a dose of common sense from the City, which seems to be putting Universal Daylighting in the dustbin where it belongs.
As we’ve been saying since it was first proposed, one size does not fit all, especially when it comes to parking.
To eliminate 50,000 parking spots from Staten Island where we depend on our cars would have been a bad, reckless policy. Those who continue to support that “Anti-Car, Anti-Staten Island” policy do not have our best interests at heart.
We have always supported a case-by-case basis approach to make intersections more safe, and we appreciate that the City is making that approach the norm.”
Today we stood behind the grieving mother of Jael Zhinin, 16, who was killed by a truck driver on the last day of school to call for the swift implementation of #SammysLaw, #universaldaylighting, scramble crosswalks & #schoolstreets to keep @NYCSchools students safe.

Sadly, Queens continues to lead NYC in a stat no one wants to lead in.
Last week @Streetfilms spoke with @QnsBPRichards about traffic safety and the need for #Daylighting in his borough. He was very clear he would like to see #UniversalDaylighting.

We are heartbroken that five New Yorkers, including a five-year-old boy, were killed in traffic crashes over the weekend.
No one should fear death or serious injury on our streets, and we are devastated that traffic violence continues to rise, especially in Queens.
Some of my first photos from 15 years ago documenting the first objects in NYC in #daylighting & public plazas!

Time flies....
This might be "the opposite of #daylighting".
Corners like this are made more dangerous for pedestrians by having cars parked up to the corners.
There are 47,000 intersections in NYC. The mayor has promised to do 1K/year. @OpenPlans @StreetsblogNYC

The before photos show how dramatic a change the footage above is. Vehicles were parked right up to (& over) the x-walk.

Daylighting is an important tool to make NYC streets safer. Hear Rachel Grosso who lives on UWS explain the benefits and how our "friends across the river" in Hoboken have had 7 years of zero fatalities.
We need #UniversalDaylighting!
