To make the hands entrusted with receiving that life into instruments of death is a betrayal so profound that no law, no politics, and no euphemism can conceal what it is: the deliberate destruction of the utterly innocent by those whose first duty is to protect life.

If the helplessness of a child cannot summon mercy from us, what remains of us that deserves to be called human?

H.5595 replaces defined restrictions after 24 weeks with a physician’s “professional judgment.” But where is the limiting principle? Where is the explicit protection for a healthy, viable, full-term child?

A law written around individual discretion must contemplate not only the conscientious physician, but the Kevorkian-type outlier willing to take that discretion to its darkest extreme.

When the life at stake is utterly defenseless, “professional judgment” is not a safeguard—it is a frighteningly open door.
