Of course if we make good things, it is not only to the credit of science; it is also to the credit of the moral choice which led us to good work. Scientific knowledge is an enabling power to do either good or bad — but it does not carry instructions on how to use it. Such power has evident value — even though the power may be negated by what one does with it.
Happy 106ᵗʰ Birthday to Richard Feynman (1918 - 1988) an influential American theoretical physicist known for his work in the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, the theory of quantum electrodynamics, and the physics of superfluidity of supercooled liquid helium, as well as his work in particle physics for which he proposed the parton model.
Feynman received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965 along with Julian Schwinger and Shinichiro Tomonaga for their independent contributions to the development of quantum electrodynamics, which revolutionized the understanding of the interactions between light and matter. Apart from his significant contributions to physics, he was known for his ability to communicate science in a clear and engaging manner. He was a popular lecturer and wrote several books aimed at teaching or explaining physics to audiences at all levels of expertise. Some of his most popular works include "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!," "What Do You Care What Other People Think?" and "The Feynman Lectures on Physics."
Feynman was also a member of the Rogers Commission, which investigated the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986. His demonstration of the O-ring's vulnerabilities in low temperatures was crucial in identifying the cause of the disaster. He passed away on February 15, 1988, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence the fields of physics and beyond.
Today marks 120ᵗʰ birthday of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer ✍️
Oppenheimer’s contributions went beyond the atomic bomb. He helped found the American School of Theoretical Physics and influenced early thinking on black holes and quantum field theory, cementing his status as a pivotal figure in 20th-century science. Post-World War II, Oppenheimer became a chief advisor to the newly created United States Atomic Energy Commission, where he advocated for international control of nuclear power and opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb.
