There are many facets of the game but one point I want to focus on is Pakistan's decision to hand the No. 6 batting position in ODIs to a player who is essentially a late-order hitter, more suited to the final 5-6 overs in T20s.

ODI cricket often presents situations like the one Pakistan had today in Lahore, where you need a batter with a decent defensive game and the ability to build an innings when required.

Abdul Samad is not an all-rounder. And despite being a specialist batter, his first-class batting average is just 13.81 which underlines his lack of skill to build the inns. Even his List A numbers (an average of 33 and a strike rate of 80) aren’t much convincing.

I won't compare him to No. 6 batters from other countries, as every team has its own pool of players.

However, it's worth noting that only a couple of years ago, Pakistan's No. 6 was Iftikhar Ahmed, who has 11 centuries in first-class and 7 in List A. This isn't to suggest that Iftikhar was the ideal No. 6. Rather, it highlights the level of batting credentials that were once considered necessary for the role compared to what we see now.

Abdul Samad may have value as a power-hitter in T20 cricket and could well develop into a quality ODI batter in the future. But with the World Cup just a year away, Pakistan need someone at No. 6 who already possesses a stronger batting pedigree and a more complete skill set.
