African American students deal constantly deal with stereotypical comments, and beyond that with different unequal treatments. It is not fair for students that are pushing themselves as a student athlete physically, yet also pushing into academics. #ucr150@besavageee
@Eyang030@besavageee Yes. An issue that needs to be highlighted in the industry. It is important to have equal academic focus between student athletes - when sports are involved !
@aaren017@besavageee Looking at it I totally agree also. It does act out like a business and seems to not be afraid to highlight the profits also from it. In comparison to trying to announce students academic achievements.
@TeresaOro007 @besavageee Yes, I believe that the action alone says a lot from the coaches themselves and the institutions. We should still advocate for student athletes academic successes and prioritize students achievements.
Livers Vs. NCAA case which is pending to this day shows a lot of what can be changed and should be taken into account when it comes down to student athletes . It was the comparison made between prisoners and athletes that was made. That was not necessary. #ucr150@besavageee
The 4-4 graduate level rule is not being accommodating for it's student athletes. Their academics are to be set first and be part of the other priorities they may have. Supporting a student athlete goes beyond promotions and sports sponsorships. #ucr150@besavageee
@sandyespinozaa@besavageee Hello Sandy! I agree with you. It only highlights something that the NCAA must take into consideration. Student athletes deserve to go for their own personal academic interests #ucr150@besavageee
Knowing that in 2010 the NCAA decided to hold no liability for any injuries from athletes is upsetting. Student athletes deserve to be cared for, and having to read that about 80% of related TBI's go unreported is mind-blowing. #ucr150@besavageee
@sandyespinozaa@besavageee YES! I was never so invested in learning more about student athletics. It is inhumane to not give students the correct care and attention needed. #ucr150@besavageee
@sandyespinozaa@besavageee Women's sports deserve to have media coverage at the same level as male sports. Promoting female sports also which is something we often lack on hearing about I personally was not really aware of how much less women sports are advertised or broadcasted. @besavageee#ucr150
Title IX had a positive effect on women athletes. Creating an increase of women participation in the sports industry, despite this positive change it is still known that women involved in sports are not paid what they deserve compared to male athletes. @besavageee#ucr150
@greciajimenez22@besavageee Yes! There should be more transparency with parents and students when it comes down to contracts. Thinking for those student athl. that are first gen and how difficult it can be also to navigate through contracts. #ucr150@besavageee
@Mandoiba@besavageee Yes sharing the correct information to student athletes is vital and is not to be questioned. Students deserve to advocate for their needs as well. #ucr150@besavageee
Understanding how athletic pressure, having to worry about low SES (socioeconomic status) and graduating as a student can be a lot. The alternative to 1 yr student scholarships - ( 4 year ) can better contribute to the educational success of student athletes. #ucr150@besavageee
@ggarc158@besavageee yes Guadalupe! At some point it's something I would support the advocation for. Students being able to self advocate, not only for their labor, image and talent but also for their well being. @besavageee#ucr150
Becoming aware of the NCAA and college athletics has broadened my perspective on college athletes and has made me question it. Amateurism is a clear example of an evolving definition model, and that's something to look out for as it impact students. #ucr150@besavageee
@Adriana_Orozco7 @besavageee I agree @Adriana_Orozco7 , in the article The Muzzle and The Megaphone it is more than clear to me that there are issues underlying in athletics and that should be addressed as well. It is important to keep on bringing up topics on NCAA too. @besavageee#ucr150
I found interesting to read the chapter "college athletes rights". I personally have not been so in tune with how athletics are managed in higher educational institutions yet I do agree that it is vital to acknowledge a need for athlete advocacy and safety. @besavageee#ucr150
