Bad news if you’ve spent the last few years telling everyone “nobody wants an EV.”

August 2026 in the UK…

BEVs took almost 30% of the new car market.

BEV registrations jumped 28% year-on-year.

Electric vans reached a record 17% market share.

BEVs are now at 25.5% year-to-date, AHEAD of the effective ZEV Mandate target.

It’s so strange that a “failed” technology keeps taking more market share every month.

You don’t have to like EVs.

But pretending nobody wants them is becoming a very difficult argument to make.

This is exactly how good news about EV infrastructure gets turned into a negative headline.

The Lancashire Telegraph has reported on new roadside EV charging points being installed under the headline…

“Roadside EV charging points mistaken for new playgrounds.”

Seriously?

Public and private investment is going into public EV charging infrastructure.

New chargers are being installed.

More people without driveways will have somewhere convenient to charge.

Access to cleaner transport.

That is the story.

Instead, we get a headline suggesting people have somehow been wandering past the works thinking a new playground is being built.

The desperation to turn it into a negative is crazy.

Creating fake outrage that they “should be building playgrounds instead”.

Looking at the photo, I’m struggling to see the swings, slides or climbing frames.

Does every construction site get “mistaken for new playgrounds”?

This matters because one of the most common criticisms of EVs is that “there aren’t enough chargers.”

Then when companies invest money into building more of them, somehow that gets presented negatively too.

We absolutely should scrutinise where chargers are installed, whether locations are appropriate and whether schemes provide good value where public money is involved.

But this work is done in consultancy, using sophisticated planning and mapping tools using multiple data points.

But turning private investment in new public charging infrastructure into a ridiculous “people thought it was a playground” story helps nobody.

Not everything involving EVs needs a negative angle.
