I am in Korea and noticeably there are some ‘Asian’ social rules here. Had this feeling in Japan as well. I remember a friend once asked me what social rules to know before visiting China and I genuinely couldn’t think of any.
China really is the more chill place of East Asia.

Academia emphasizes novelty too much. we need more people doing less exciting work, reproducing and validating existing results, reporting things that fails. And we should give people credit for that.

I feel like I haven't done anything research or physics ever since AI found a counterexample for Jacobian conjecture. I think my body is just subliminally telling me my work is in vain.

Half of my X timeline is talking about abusing math-heavy research areas with AI slops. It's absurd that people didn’t notice pro-level AI was already able to produce real papers in math-heavy areas a year ago.

A line due to Nima Arkani-Hamed that I kept telling students was “it’s infinitely more important to know that something is true than knowing why it is true.” This is particularly relevant now that human understanding is becoming the bottleneck in working with AI. I view understanding as the subjective state produced by confidence certificates. Deductive proof is a powerful kind of confidence certificate but it has always played only a minuscule role in human understanding. Confidence certificates in the form of numerical tests, zero-knowledge proofs, or even physical experiments will become the primary means of achieving the illusion of understanding.

Having used AI heavily for 3+ years it still completely blew my mind when I tested water on GPT pro for the first time last year. It no longer feels like AI is my assistant but I'm becoming its assistant.

We all should rethink our place as a researcher in this new era.
