If you are an #ecologist or #biologist wanting illustrations for your research and #scicomm, but aren’t sure how to work with an illustrator, I made this Start Here page to help answer your questions! #sciart#scientificillustration

1/11 🚨🚨 New in @royalsociety proceedings B! We examine how diversity accumulates in extreme habitats by studying the evolution of the zoarcoids - the wolffishes, eelpouts, and relatives! #science#biology#evolution
Wrasses and parrotfish (Labridae) are among the most diverse lineages of reef fishes on earth. A new study sheds light on their diversification during the Miocene.
Painting reef fish is fun because I get to use turquoise and magenta!

New from the Near Lab, a super collaboration led by @ChaseBrownstein
Phylogenomics and evolutionary history of the iconic reef fish clade wrasses and parrotfishes (Labridae)
https://t.co/8UfVcX4LWV
Wow @ChaseBrownstein congrats!! This is a huge accomplishment and such cool research. It’s always a pleasure painting fish for the @TJNear lab, especially when they are as beautifully diverse as wrasses.
1/12 🚨🚨🚨 New paper in @ScienceMagazine@ScienceAdvances! We demonstrate the hidden, recent origins of reef fish diversity in the Miocene by leveraging genome-wide data to reveal the evolutionary history of wrasses, parrotfishes, and relatives! #science

Research by Sonal Singhal and colleagues explores approaches to understanding #speciation through the example of Xantusia lizards. My challenge as a science illustrator was to paint the ecomorphs and their distinct habitats: rock crevices and decaying leaves.
#sciart#evolution
The paintings were created with watercolor. Using a ton of water, some choice colors, and a little bit of salt, the first layer of paint showed the contours of the rocks and leaves for the backgrounds. I could then add the shadows and details.
Excited to see my fish paintings in another publication by @TJNear and Chris Thacker. 19,100 species 🤯 I haven’t painted that many… yet.

Chris Thacker and I have published a new review on the phylogenetics and biology of acanthopterygian fishes. This lineage includes more than 19,100 species, comprising nearly one third of all species of vertebrate animals!

New study - Just published a review on the phylogenetics and biology of 𝐴𝑐𝑎𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑝𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑦𝑔𝑖𝑖, the spiny-rayed fishes, which comprises nearly one-third of all species of vertebrate animals (over 19,000 species).

The fifth poster for Invasive Species Awareness Week features Virginia state invasives including mute swans, wild hogs, nutria, burning bush, and spotted lanternflies.
Check out the resources for reporting invasive species at the bottom!

It's National Invasive Species Awareness Week (#NISAW) and #invasivespecies sure can affect human health and wellbeing. The fourth poster in the ISC series highlights those impacts, with beautifully water-colored examples 🦟🕷️🌱🌰
Thank you, Life Science Studios! 🎨 @jehimes
It is Invasive Species Awareness Week, and I designed 5 posters for the @ISWGvt. This one is about the environmental impacts of #invasivespecies.
Did you know invasive species account for 60% of global plant and animal extinctions?
#sciart#invasivespeciesweek
It's National Invasive Species Awareness Week (#NISAW)! Over the next five days, the ISC will unveil 5 beautifully water-colored #invasivespecies posters. The second poster in the series highlights environmental impacts 🌱
Thank you, Life Science Studios! @jehimes 🎨
I have been working with the @ISWGvt to create posters about the impacts of invasive species. I am honored to be part of this important work and I hope the posters spread awareness and education about invasive species. Poster #1 is all about the ISC and their work, check it out!
It's National Invasive Species Awareness Week! Over the next five days, the ISC will unveil 5 beautifully water-colored #invasivespecies posters. The first poster highlights the ISC and our work in Virginia and beyond 🌎
Thank you, Life Science Studios! @jehimes 🎨
Most Delicious Poison is coming out in paperback! I created the illustrations inside the book, and I can’t believe it’s been a year since its release already. Check it out if you haven’t already!
