In April 2009, Las Vegas gambler John Kane discovered a software bug in a video poker machine that would eventually let him and a friend win more than $1 million.
The flaw had been hiding inside IGT’s Game King machines for seven years.
Kane discovered that, under a precise sequence of button presses, he could win a valuable hand at a low denomination and then make the machine replay that same hand at a much higher value.
He called his friend Andre Nestor.
Together, they worked out how to trigger the glitch reliably and began moving between casinos.
Kane alone was later estimated by the FBI to have collected more than $500,000 from eight Las Vegas casinos.
Nestor eventually won roughly another $480,000 using the exploit in Pennsylvania.
Then casino surveillance noticed something impossible.
Kane was repeatedly winning jackpots using the exact same hands.
He was arrested, and federal prosecutors later charged both men with computer fraud and conspiracy, arguing that deliberately exploiting the bug amounted to hacking.
Their lawyers argued something much simpler.
They had never altered, opened or tampered with the machines.
They had only pressed buttons the casinos allowed customers to press.
After more than 18 months of legal battles, prosecutors dropped the computer-hacking charge.
Months later, they dropped the remaining wire-fraud conspiracy case too.
Kane and Nestor walked away without a federal conviction for exploiting the glitch.
I publish a Risk On/Risk Off indicator for my subscribers. It's based on an oscillator using NYSE Advance/Decline issues. Yesterday it flipped to Risk Off. Here are the triggers for the last 13 years. It was Risk Off about 25% of the time. Just one more check-mark on the scoreboard.
Finally, Bitcoin has been on the move after holding the $60k support zone for almost a year. That’s how long a typical Bitcoin winter lasts, so I’m sensing that a new 4-year cycle bull market is underway. Note that the Z-score of BTC/gold has turned positive after being -100%. In the past that has generally been confirmation of a bottom.
What does all of the above suggest? We are in a new secular regime of a higher cost of capital, which suggests that governments will respond with that oldest trick in the book: financial repression.
@CiovaccoCapital Thanks as always, Chris. I wonder if at some stage you could include the SVM scores across the 2000-2 +/- the 2007-9 periods to shows just how they change in ‘real time’ in weakening / bear market conditions? Your vids are the highlights of my finance week.
In my opinion, this is the most compelling chart for being a stock market investor.
Over the last 50 years:
-US Inflation: up 6x
-US Treasury Bills: up 8x
-S&P 500 total return: up 283x
Over the long run, stocks trounce inflation and protect your purchasing power.
Stan Weinstein ends his great book with the following, regarding stage 4s:
"Promise yourself that you absolutely will never again buy a stock in Stage 4 no matter how exciting the story. Also swear that you'll never hold onto a declining Stage 4 stock no matter what rumors come your way."
By following this one simple rule, you can avoid huge drawdowns to your capital.
I’m a retired brain surgeon and I wanna tell you why you feel like life is passing by. I just need one minute to explain this to you so hang in there.
Repetitive daily routines stop the brain from recording clear detailed memories. When every day looks the same, your brain does not track time the same as a clock does. It tracks change. If nothing new happens then days, months, and years start to blur together.
This is know as Time compression. When life lacks variety, your brain compresses past days together, making it feel like time is sped up.
To stop feeling like life is passing you by, add new experiences to your life. Break routine habits, like changing your daily home routine, taking a different route to work, or trying a new hobby.
Schedule small trips or plan new adventures so your days do not blend together.
Practice mindfulness by staying fully focused on what you are doing right now and not trying to race off to the next task.
Keep a journal and write down happy memories or memorable parts of the day before you go to sleep.
Take deep, calm breaths when you feel anxious or rushed to return your focus to the moment.
You can and you will retrain your brain to not feel like life is passing you by by following these few simple measures.
#Bitcoin
Historically, when BTC first touched the Monthly Tenkan 🔴, the cycle bottom was already in.
Whether price reclaimed it immediately or not didn’t change that.
We are now at the first touch again.
Bullish sentiment has stayed elevated.
AAII Bulls' 50-week average crossed above 49 on August 12.
Since 1988, the S&P 500 rose 1 year later after all 11 prior signals with a full year of data. The median return was 16.56%.
