From Linear to Circular: Pathways for #Sustainable Lifestyles
@joshsukrit & Trinayana Kaushik outline pathways to nudge behaviour towards a #CircularEconomy approach and away from linear production and #consumption.

India’s net-zero transition will be shaped by State governments and, even more importantly, by districts.
I write this piece in @the_hindu with @sreenk. State-level GHG inventories and climate risk maps allow precise, locally tailored decarbonisation pathways. Integrating nature-based solutions will strengthen both carbon sequestration and community resilience. Institutional frameworks like climate missions and real-time trackers are needed to ensure accountability. Community participation is crucial for action on the ground. This is the emerging model of India’s climate leadership, data-led, locally grounded, and ecosystem-driven #NetZeroTransition #ClimateAction #climatechange
Balancing development and conservation needs to be worked out by the state and all the concerned stakeholders requiring policy reconsideration, with necessary approvals & exemptions to enable planned, timely development of these projects. (3/3)
@supriyasahuias@the_hindu@sreenk India & TN must create sufficient storage capacities especially ones that use domestic and local resources as we increase RE in the generation mix. (2/2)
@supriyasahuias@the_hindu@sreenk Ma’am, very well-written. As TN adopts NetZero, strategic energy storage is equally imp. Pumped Storage Hydro Projects in locations such as the Nilgiris need policy reconsideration, with necessary approvals & exemptions to enable planned, timely devp. (1/2)
Arvind Gupta and J R Bhatt, writing on COP-30 at Belém, Brazil, argue that India must pause, ponder and reflect.
India remains supportive of the Brazilian presidency at #COP30 and is fully engaged in securing equitable and meaningful outcomes.
India has already done more than its fair share in addressing the global #climatechange.
India has steadily decoupled economic growth from greenhouse gas emissions. Between 2005 and 2020, emissions intensity of GDP declined by 36%. Globally, India has led through the International Solar Alliance , the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure , the Global Biofuel Alliance and the Mission LiFE.
It is striking that even after 32 years of the UNFCCC and a decade of the Paris Agreement, the world still lacks an agreed definition of climate finance, and is grappling with the issues of technology transfer.

. @vifindia today hosted a discussion on “The Role of #Coal in India’s Comprehensive National Power”, inaugurated by Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Member, @NITIAayog, who underscored the critical role of advancing India’s R&D capacity in shaping the future of the Indian power sector. He emphasised the vital role of clean coal technologies, especially the indigenous development of the AUSC technology.
Relying on its endogenous national, strategic coal reserves and expanding non-fossil sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear, and exploring tidal and geothermal, are all part of India’s development paradigm. The forum was unanimous that coal will remain vital for India’s energy security & inclusive growth.
Development is the first defence against climate change. As we look ahead, our mission is to increase the availability of a reliable, stable, and secure supply of energy, particularly electricity, at an affordable price for India’s 1.4 billion people. With such guiding compass, India is steadily transitioning to low-carbon energy sources based on science and evidence, reaffirming its commitment to addressing climate change.
US built its wealth on massive historical N₂O emissions. Now the US slaps tariffs on Indian agri while peddling the myth of ‘high Indian N₂O'. @JRBhatt60 new paper exposes the lie. Stop shifting blame and start owning responsibility. #ClimateJustice
Globally, the top N₂O emitters are the USA, EU, China, Russia, and Brazil. India is 6th, but its emissions are still 86% lower than the USA’s — showing how wide the gap really is. https://t.co/7Jom4Y498K
Congratulations to @JRBhatt60 & @vifindia on this important publication! Coal continues to be the backbone of 🇮🇳 energy security, powering 🇮🇳economic growth. This research is a timely reminder of why coal still matters for our development journey. #EnergyForIndia#CoalMatters
Vivekananda International Foundation @vifindia releases a Policy Brief titled Why does India still need coal? Rich countries vilify coal with India as a specific target, while expanding on their own oil and gas resources. Nations like the UK, the USA, and Germany that amassed all their wealth based on coal now push for its phase-out, even as their fossil fuel use rises every passing year. Between 1900 and 2022, India's coal production was only 3.04% of the world’s total production. #ViksitBharat2047 #SustainableDevelopment #Pathways2NetZero #coal

India's coal methane emissions are significantly lower than @IEA claims. It's crucial that global climate strategies rely on accurate data—not generalised assumptions. #DataMatters
The recent reports from the @IEA cast India in a negative light by reporting quantities higher than the actual number. My piece in @CurrSci counters the narrative and optics generated around methane emissions from Indian coal mines.

Today @vifindia hosted a brainstorming session titled "Issues and Options for India at COP 29” under the chairmanship of Dr. Arvind Gupta, Director VIF. Eminent experts, including Dr. Kirit Parikh, Mr. RR Rashmi, and Dr. Purnamita Dasgupta, participated along with other experts from government and civil society. Climate change is a global collective action problem requiring international cooperation through multilateralism under the UNFCCC. Global climate action should promote climate justice by recognising the fundamental equality of all people in accessing economic growth and sustainable development. It was emphasised that adaptation is an overwhelming concern and overriding priority for all developing countries. Climate change can best be addressed by adopting globally climate-friendly lifestyles. Despite its low per-capita, historical cumulative, and current GHG emissions, India is fully engaged in the process and is supportive of efforts of the COP 29 presidency to produce equitable, tangible, and substantial outcomes.
China, USA and the EU are the top three methane emitters. India ranks 4th. However, this narrative is not well-founded as the gap between India and the first three is substantial.
