On the occasion of the 44th Foundation Day of RIS, Director General, Prof. Sachin Kumar Sharma (@SKSharma_World) reflected on a journey that began with a simple yet powerful belief that ideas matter, and that research can help shape a better future.
For over four decades, RIS has served as a platform where scholars, policymakers, diplomats, and practitioners come together to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the developing world. What began as a vision in 1983 has grown into a vibrant institution committed to advancing knowledge, strengthening South-South cooperation, and amplifying the voice of the Global South.
This occasion is not only about celebrating an institution; it is about honouring the people who built it, our former leaders, scholars, staff, partners, and friends across the world. Their dedication, wisdom, and unwavering belief in the RIS mission have shaped the institution we know today.
As we look ahead, we remain guided by the values on which RIS was founded: collective wisdom, cooperation, and a shared commitment to a more inclusive and equitable world.

As part of the International Workshop on Harnessing Digital Technologies for Climate-Resilient and Sustainable Agriculture in Global South, jointly organized by DAKSHIN - Global South Centre of Excellence at @RIS_NewDelhi and Centre For Development and Enterprises Great Lakes (CDE) @ForEnterprises, Burundi, the panel explored innovations, challenges, and lessons shaping digital agriculture.
Moderating the session, Dr Pratap Singh Birthal, Distinguished Fellow, RIS, highlighted that agriculture remains central to economic development in the Global South, yet continues to face persistent challenges. He emphasized that digital agriculture and mobile technologies can help bridge the information gap between research institutions and farmers, supported by stronger institutions, infrastructure, investments, and extension systems.
Dr Jean Claude Nyamweru, Head of Agricultural Policy, CDE, Burundi, highlighted that while Burundi is still at an early stage of digital agriculture adoption, growing mobile phone penetration, youth engagement, government support, and international partnerships are creating new opportunities for agricultural transformation despite challenges.
Pr. Hicham El Moussaoui, Universitรฉ Sultan Moulay Slimane de Bรฉni-Mellal Maroc, Morocco, shared Moroccoโs experience with digital agriculture and emphasized that technology alone cannot drive transformation unless solutions are affordable, practical, locally adapted, and supported by strong institutions and infrastructure. He highlighted examples such as smart irrigation, AI-based crop disease detection, digital market platforms, and satellite-based advisory systems.
Pr. Linda Kavuka Kiguhi, LLM, Founder of Think Tank - Suvira Africa, Kenya, stressed that digital agriculture innovations must better reflect the realities of Africaโs smallholder farmers, including limited internet access, low digital literacy, climate risks, and weak infrastructure. Drawing from examples in Kenya, she highlighted the importance of simple, multilingual, offline, farmer-centred, and inclusive technologies, particularly for women and marginalized communities.
