The Value Question
There’s something special about walking with someone who knew you when you were younger.
@JuliusMukunda and I worked at @uwonet together. I was the Advocacy Officer and he was an intern. He was hardworking and jolly then. He still is.
So the first part of our walk was a trip down memory lane.
“How is X? When did you last see Y? Remember when our office used to be at Z?”
And on and on we went.
While some of our colleagues from those days went on to serve in other sectors, Julius and I have stayed in civil society. This is where we chose to serve.
Naturally, our conversation turned to the value of civil society, especially in a season when the relevance and legitimacy of the sector are increasingly being questioned.
It’s strange to sit in this space, knowing that fellow CSO leaders wake up every day contending with questions of continuity, staff wellbeing, donor demands, community needs and shrinking resources, and after all that, still have to contend with questions of legitimacy.
“Maybe,” Julius and I mused, “we haven’t quite articulated our value proposition.”
Do people understand the magnitude of civil society’s contribution to the economy? The people we employ and the taxes we pay? Our contribution to many of the Sustainable Development Goals? The services we provide, the communities we reach, and the innovations and solutions we have helped introduce on the social justice front?
Articulating our value is certainly not a silver bullet. The challenges facing civil society are far more complex than that.
But it might go some way towards making visible what is too often unseen, and broadening the story of civil society beyond projects, grants and donor funding.
There is a bigger story about our contribution that needs to be told.
Not simply a story about what civil society does, but about what civil society makes possible.
And perhaps those of us who have chosen to serve here must keep finding better ways to tell it.

.@JuliusMukunda: Another challenge is that supplementary budgets tend to be consumptive in nature, which weakens the performance of the shilling.
