Urgent Appeal: Evacuate my wounded cousin Israa & her two children, aunt Tahany, cousin Sabreen and 80 patients trapped at the Amal Hospital in Khan Younis: This photo is of my brother Mohammed 4 weeks ago checking on our aunt, her children, and grandchildren, including our wounded first cousin Israa Alkhatib, who became quadriplegic after an IDF airstrike in Gaza City on October 25, 2023. Israa was wounded in the same strike that killed my dad’s youngest brother Uncle Riyad, 12 days after another IDF strike had destroyed my family’s home where I grew up and badly injured Israa’s father, Uncle Ibrahim, my dad’s middle brother. Israa has required intensive care since then, given her complete loss of mobility and disability. After being forced to evacuate Gaza’s Shifa Hospital, my aunt Tahany took her youngest daughter Sabreen and Israa, along with her two grandchildren (Israa’s 7 & 10-year-old children), to the Amal Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. When the IDF’s ground assault expanded to the south, the Amal Hospital, around which thousands of displaced civilians had taken refuge, was surrounded by Israeli troops and armor for weeks. On two occasions, including a week ago, thousands were able to leave the area through humanitarian corridors.

However, Israa requires a stretcher or a wheelchair to be moved and cannot leave the hospital premises because all the roads around the hospital are badly damaged, and there’s no space/ability to push a wheelchair around. She and about an estimated 80 patients were left behind after thousands of displaced people and a few hundred patients hastily left the area. Furthermore, IDF troops destroyed all the ambulances on site and have prevented the Red Cross and the Red Crescent from organizing evacuation convoys to get the remaining patients out, along with a few dozen people still at the hospital and up to 100 hospital staff. My brother Mohammed had not seen Israa and Tahany for almost four weeks but reestablished contact with them two days ago; they confirmed that IDF troops had entered the facility, searched everybody, and arrested a few people but then left people who were still stuck at the hospital. Despite multiple efforts to either evacuate the remaining patients and a few displaced people still on-site or at least deliver them desperately needed supplies to survive, those attempts have failed, and Israa, along with dozens of patients, is suffering horribly.

I need your help in making a massive public push to allow for ambulance convoys to come in and evacuate my cousin Israa and the dozens of patients still stuck at the facility. Given that the IDF has already entered the hospital and no new people have been allowed in since, the staff and patients, along with a few displaced persons, pose no threat and should be allowed to leave and head to another hospital, possibly Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah/southern Gaza or any other safe place where they can access life-saving supplies and care.

There are two ways to help:

1. Tag, email, message, contact, and call Israeli and IDF officials, especially those whom you know. Send this post to them and specifically ask that the Amal Hospital patients and staff be evacuated from Khan Younis with the help of the Red Cross or the Red Crescent. This can all be done in coordination with the Israeli military. Unfortunately, the IDF has thus far refused to allow ambulances to come in and evacuate people trapped at the Amal Hospital.

2. Email and call the White House, members of Congress, and Senators and ask them to publicly push for the evacuation of patients at the Amal Hospital. The United States can and must play a role in protecting civilian lives in Gaza & should not sit idly by as simple measures are being blocked from taking place – why can't the @ICRC_ilot or Palestinian Red Crescent ambulances evacuate patients or deliver life-saving supplies?

This is something that we can all get behind, regardless of where you stand on this issue and war; saving civilian, non-combatant lives would be a beneficial humanitarian action!

Ten months ago, we launched the Vesuvius Challenge to solve the ancient problem of the Herculaneum Papyri, a library of scrolls that were flash-fried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

Today we are overjoyed to announce that our crazy project has succeeded. After 2000 years, we can finally read the scrolls:

These fifteen columns come from the very end of the first scroll we have been able to read and contain new text from the ancient world that has never been seen before. The author – probably Epicurean philosopher Philodemus – writes here about music, food, and how to enjoy life's pleasures. In the closing section, he throws shade at unnamed ideological adversaries – perhaps the stoics? – who "have nothing to say about pleasure, either in general or in particular."

This year, the Vesuvius Challenge continues. The text that we revealed so far represents just 5% of one scroll.

In 2024, our goal is to from reading a few passages of text to entire scrolls, and we're announcing a new $100,000 grand prize for the first team that is able to read at least 90% of all four scrolls that we have scanned.

The scrolls stored in Naples that remain to be read represent more than 16 megabytes of ancient text. But the villa where the scrolls were found was only partially excavated, and scholars tell us that there may be thousands more scrolls underground. Our hope is that the success of the Vesuvius Challenge catalyzes the excavation of the villa, that the main library is discovered, and that whatever we find there rewrites history and inspires all of us.

It's been a great joy to work on this strange and amazing project.
