I would be fine with requiring developers to set aside some homes to be rented to Section 8 voucher holders, or rented at cost; but IZ usually requires they be rented *at a loss,* which makes it effectively a tax on new housing. We should not be taxing new housing!

@maxdubler You are too dismissive of IZ policies. In super-hot markets, a reasonable IZ level does not crush housing production. When circumstances require change, like interest rates and construction costs rising, the politics of IZ policy make ratcheting the IZ level down difficult.

@cdmxbrandon__ @UrbanCourtyard @JasonPostier I don’t see anyone sneering in this thread. In my area, a reasonably priced SFH requires moving to distant exurbs. The courtyard idea offers an option that doesn’t really exist that would satisfy some (not all) of the needs that families have.

@UrbanCourtyard @AiongTaigi I visited friends in Copenhagen who lived in a courtyard building with their two young girls. They loved it. It brought them close to other families, supervising the children playing outside.
