Independent journalist Yesica Prado @Pradoreports was arrested about 25 minutes ago(cited and released) at the W. Grand/23rd St. sweeps. Russell Bates of Copwatch shared this video.
Why is @oaklandpoliceca arresting journalists today?
This week and next, @oakland is sweeping what is probably the longest standing curbside community of disabled elders on the west side. A community that has depended on one another to survive for years.
@MayorShengThao this is disgusting.

Read our @sfdefender statement re: charges against protesters for a GG Bridge action in April. @SFDAOffice is weaponizing the law against people of conscience who are demanding an end to the ongoing displacement & killings of 1000s of innocent ppl in Gaza. https://t.co/UMFzUiu5Dd
Civil rights attorney and Housing activist Andrea Hensen was arrested this morning in Oakland after chaining herself to a fence to resist a Caltrans eviction of unhoused folks.
@sfdefender urges Gov. @GavinNewsom and the #CALeg to retain the full, promised funding for the Public Defense Pilot Project, which funds resentencing programs across the state. Learn about the Freedom Project, which PDPP funds, and the great people it helps in this graphic. 🧵
We @sfdefender strongly affirm the Constitutional rights of students to exercise free speech on college campuses in the Bay Area and across the country. 🧵
We strongly denounce the termination of Sonoma State University (SSU) President Mike Lee.
Lee's removal comes in the wake of his courageous decision to accept the demands of SSU students advocating on behalf of Palestinians in Gaza enduring Israel’s 7 months-long genocide.
@SFDefender warriors continue to push for policy change, testifying before #CALeg to support bills that promote second chances & healing -- such as #AB2354, which our office co-sponsors -- and to oppose bills that reflexively throw policing & incarceration at every complex issue.
BREAKING: another stabbing attack on a Palestinian-American has occurred. Last night in #AustinTX, a group of American Muslims were driving home after a pro-Palestine protest when this man approached their vehicle at a stop sign, started screaming the n-word and other obscenities, attempted to rip their Free Palestine flag off their car, yanked one of them out of the vehicle, started a fight, and ultimately stabbed a 23-year-old Palestinian-American in the chest.
Alhamdulillah, the young man is now recovering after surgery and the suspect has been arrested. We call on local and federal law enforcement to file hate crime charges against the suspect, who police have identified as #BertJamesBaker.
From the murder of six-year-old Wadea outside Chicago to the shooting of three college students in Burlington, Vermont, far too many violent attacks like this have occurred over the past four months.
Those responsible for this violence must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law...and those fomenting the anti-Palestinian and anti-Muslim hate that leads to this violence must be condemned. #Austin #Islamophobia #FreePalestine
Racist crime narratives not only perpetuate stereotypes but also influence public perceptions. Let's advocate for stories that break free from harmful tropes and contribute to a more just and inclusive society.
Racist crime narratives perpetuate harmful stereotypes. It's time to dismantle these portrayals and amplify diverse voices to create narratives that reflect the complexity of human experiences.
Disappointing to see @RepSwalwell peddle the same myth as Ron DeSantis — the lie that reform prosecutors are responsible for crime when they champion real solutions to public safety and undo the damage of mass incarceration. 😒

Without healing our communities, we cannot hope to achieve the liberation of our people through policy and reform alone. Those who fight for justice must also be resourced themselves!

In Oakland 50% of calls received by the OPD are nonviolent and noncriminal. Punishment-based approaches don't solve poverty & the social conditions that push communities into impossible situations that create cycles of violence.” @urbanpeace#TogetherAgainstViolence#CareNotCages
