@Logisticsau@SimonOKing Beach packed because it’s cooler there not 40c 🤦🏼♂️ and most have air con. Not everyone here has access to a beach/air con so it’s important for them to be made aware when it’s very hot to take care. Just because it doesn’t affect you doesn’t mean it’s not important to someone else
Very warm night but some major local differences
With no surface heating/no wind - cold air sinks Alton 15-17C ~100m asl whilst Four Marks 24-26C ~200m asl in the very hot airmass - it's called an inversion - and I'm sure places like Alton are very thankful for that this morning!
@europasaintsfc@RoostWeather@metdesk We’re talking about a high temperature event not a prolonged drought that’s the difference so using an event that was 5-8deg cooler than what we expect early next week to justify carrying on as normal like some are using it for is just stupid and potentially deadly
"We've had heatwaves before - 1976"
I've displayed hottest day of 1976 (thanks @RoostWeather) against the current forecast for next Mon (thanks @metdesk)
It's 5degC flipping hotter and Tues potentially hotter!
Just 3 years after we've broken UK Max temps we should be alarmed
@Jennife53621801 @tomasibray @Nafie_Wafie@RoostWeather@metdesk Hit the nail on the head here, you had air con, even just for a few hours is more than what most of this country has access to and it makes all the difference to heatstroke risk if you can cool yourself down to recover
"We've had heatwaves before - 1976" Part 2
All talk of Max but Min temps as/more important re. heatstroke as the body can cope with another hot day if it's cool enough and thus recovers at night.
3rd July 76 Min (@RoostWeather) ~ 12-19C
Current forecast (@metdesk) 5-8C warmer🤯
@pbweather@RoostWeather@metdesk You call it speculation, I call it educated guess but you’re right, can’t truly tell unless the exact same setup occurred again and let’s hope not! I agree with the 2nd point warmer nights, 1976 wasn’t that warm overnight, a repeat now would be more deadly on that fact alone.
@Nafie_Wafie@RoostWeather@metdesk The hotter temperature of 35.9C was recorded on the 3rd July at Cheltenham which also had slightly more widespread heat to the NW - but for reference I've attached 28th June that hit 35.6C in Southampton
@pbweather@RoostWeather@metdesk Of course, but no one is and has ever said heatwaves didn't occur in the past, the point being if exactly the same set-up to 1976 occurred now - we wouldn't be looking at 6 weeks of 30-35C - we'd be looking at 6 weeks of 33-38C
