Robotics has a “two people in a garage” problem nobody talks about enough:
software builders can clone a repo at 2am and immediately have the same basic laboratory as a startup.
hardware builders need:
bench
tools
parts
test space
another person who knows why CAN randomly died
someone who has already fought the exact sim→real bug ruining their week
which is why I love that @MissionRobotBay + RallySF are literally running bring-your-own-robot working nights now.
not a conference. not panels.
bring the half-built arm, drone, gripper, teleop rig, broken URDF, half-trained policy.
sit beside other people building physical AI and debug for two hours.
I want WAY more of this.
the thing that made software explode wasn't just better computers.
it was giving millions of weirdos somewhere to build together.
robotics needs its version of the garage + hackerspace + open-source community fused into one.
@leecflannery@Scav
I feel so lucky that my job is to invite smart people to create beautiful scenes while they teach me about all manner of the most technical things.
Tonight, with @withprotegeai and @leecflannery
Tue 9/1: The Reality Gap, a monthly sim-to-real seminar with Rally SF (@leecflannery). Session one sets the baseline the series returns to in January. Room's capped at 40 – request a seat, tell us what you're working on. Dinner from Protégé. 6-9pm: https://t.co/1ZdidBU428

directors are quietly leaving, quitting, or getting absorbed into the industry. the solution is to fund them. I have moved $25k (allocated $80k) to tech interior & adjacent writer-directors creating cinema.
A four-hole robot mini golf tournament at the @MissionRobotBay hackathon has me wondering who’s collecting training data from whom. Brb, practicing my swing for next time @trossenrobotics
A few steps down, you attend an event where @Atharva__Atre explains how VLA, WAM, JEPA, and world models work. Love the energy when small groups of focused people searching for what is next. What a time to be alive @thesfcommons@leecflannery

really inspiring session today on AI @leecflannery . On the theory of thinking and reasoning in general. I think humans follow a similar approach when asked how we create certain thoughts. Generate a response first. Then trace back the reasoning.
