I've tweeted this photo before (or one just like it). For those who don't realize how Napoleonic looking some of the uniforms at the start of WW1 were. Four years after this photo things will already look like early WW2. Tanks, planes, gas, camo, helmets, etc.
Emerging preclinical data suggest that our T cells may actually prefer ketones, molecules we produce when we're fasting, doing a strenuous workout, or following a ketogenic diet.
This isn't just a minor quirk of biochemistry - it appears that T cells fueled by ketones may be more effective at fighting infection.
Typically, fasting has been associated with a suppression of immune function, which seems contradictory to the idea that ketones, produced during fasting, could enhance T cell activity.
It's an enigmatic area of biochemistry, and a reminder that our biological systems are complex and multi-faceted, often evading straightforward interpretations.

"But I can't train 2-3 hours a day, I'm not training for the Olympics!"
The thing that must be understood..
Low intensity training volume is not only central to endurance performance. Low intensity training volume is central to long-term health!
The current predicament...
Person wakes up, rushes to car & spends 30min to an hour with cortisol elevated, blood glucose elevated, lactate elevated, getting stressed out driving to work. 😡
Person arrives at work, sits down for 8hrs + and values of all of the above markers only go up from there!
Person is aware of the importance of health and fitness, so person drives to the gym, pushes the intensity of an hour long workout that only sends all of the above even higher!
Person drives home, eats a quick convenient meal, & is surprised how hard it is to get good sleep!😵💫
Person begins the pattern all over the next day.
Our system is not built to survive this pattern. This pattern repeated year after year will lead to very poor health at a very early point in your life. 🤒
Fitting a large amount of movement into the day to modulate cortisol, to modulate blood glucose, to modulate blood lactate is not a luxury, it is what your body needs to function properly. It is how it/you were built to live!
And, with that, I'm off to toodle around on the bike for 3 hours. 🚴
/end manifesto.
My wife just told me that she is sick of getting emails that start with "Hope you are well" or that use the phrase "in these crazy times." So I am pilot-testing alternatives. So far the winner is "Hello. I am not dead. It would be good if you were also not dead."
Rationality: All 25 lectures from my Harvard Gen Ed course here. What is rationality? Why does it seem so scarce? Why are humans smart enough to figure out the Big Bang & DNA but stupid enough to burn witches & own slaves? How can we become more rational? https://t.co/R76hiYM8lc
I have put together an annotated list of a few useful resources to understand global politics issues during Covid-19. Will keep adding more. Suggestions for more are welcome: https://t.co/Y6ufR4QAoI
Community A beats the virus through mass testing, isolation, culture, and borders.
Community B takes its losses but develops herd immunity.
B is more robust to future outbreaks of the same or similar viruses.
A is more robust to completely novel pathogens and to bioweapons.
Nurses & doctors in a dedicated covid icu in a Mumbai hospital after successfully taking a patient of the ventilator. It was the patients wife’s birthday & he spoke to her on a video call within minutes of extubation.
Jerome Adams informs Chris Wallace that more people will die from smoking than coronavirus.
Remember that time cigarette smoke shut down the economy, trapped people at home & flooded emergency rooms beyond capacity?
The Trump WH is filled with incompetent clowns. #HowWeGotHere
How about providing PPE kits to India's healthcare professionals? Or issue ration cards to poor migrant workers who can't feed their children. What is the status of testing for SARS-CoV-2?
Alas, tokenism wins it for the vote bank. Lights out. Literally & figuratively.
Criticism of @who has gone to far, when senior officials and commentators are calling it China's "boot licker" and questioning if it should even be allowed to participate in national planning processes in countries like India. Few things to keep in mind👇(1/N)
@OmairTAhmad I've been saying the exact same thing. It also serves as a ready indication of visible public support. Those nine minutes generated more actionable intelligence than months of "targeted polls" ever could.
