A welcoming present just out this morning for a Mr A Burnham to underline just how limited his latitude as PM will be:
The UK government borrowed £23.3 billion last month, 30 per cent or £5.4 billion higher than a year earlier.
It was also more than the £18.8 billion expected by most economists and the £17.7 billion forecast by the Office for Budget Responsibility, the UK’s independent fiscal watchdog.
The interest payable on government debt rose to £11.7 billion, the highest ever recorded in any May.
When citizens lose belief in their government, police, judiciary and official media at the same time it's a huge problem. These bedrocks of post-war western democracies gave certainty and confidence in the future. Identity politics appears to be actively making things worse.
Our study of 6 major Western European nations finds Britons uniquely lack confidence in the police
% with a lot/fair amount of confidence in police
🇩🇰 74%
🇫🇷 61%
🇩🇪 62%
🇮🇹 64%
🇪🇸 57%
🇬🇧 43% (net -10)

"Flatters to deceive" used to describe someone trying to con you through charm. Pretty clear derivation. Unsure what deception is involved now it's rolled out to describe someone delivering below expectations. Any ideas on this switch of meaning?
Surely this person should just claim to be a 'trans-medic'? Someone who has always identified as a medic, despite not being qualified as one. He'd gain instant 'Be kind rather than vilifying him' support!
I think possibly the best thing about Elon Musk becoming a trillionaire is how angry it makes a bunch of losers who've never built a thing in their lives.
The Government's communications failure is disturbing. Take a listen to the Secretary of State for Business and Trade. A senior MP, in Parliament for over a decade. Yet he can go into an interview on a subject declaring that he has no facts, but a lot of faith. It's unacceptable.
Peter Kyle: the plan is great
Naga Munchetty: have you seen the plan?
Kyle: no
Munchetty: So how do you know its great?
Peter Kyle: "Because I have faith in a PM.. to fund the plan & design a plan & lead a plan, of course & he is the PM that is fit for the moment we're in"
My ex-MP swings fully behind the left's desperate need for far-right conspiracies. In our binary world, noble goodies need despicable baddies - otherwise they have no-one to fight except themselves.
Caroline Lucas: "We need to recognise that what happened on the streets of Belfast was being orchestrated by the far right, by Elon Musk, by a network of people who actually want this to happen, so it wasn't quite as spontaneous as it looked.. and that has to be stopped"
Medhi Hasan: “The 2 biggest hits to growth in the UK over last 10-15 years were brought about by Tory govts: austerity & Brexit”
Tory MP Jeremy Hunt: “Covid, global financial crisis, Ukraine?”
MH: “They were global issues. I’m talking about ones we did to ourselves”

Worthy. But no where near as worthwhile as protecting children from sexualisation in the name of trans-education, protecting them from rape by grooming gangs or protecting them from irreversible, sexualised medical interventions.
This government will not stand by while children are put at risk online.
Today I am calling on the tech companies to introduce device-level controls to prevent children from taking, sharing or viewing nude images.
And if they don’t act, we will.
We're at the point where the Telegraph are literally making up quotes.
I said when veg is sold for pennies in supermarkets, it's a sign someone's not being paid properly.
Farmers being paid a pittance for their produce.
Workers on less than a living wage in supermarkets.
The idea that governments can make sound technological investments is absurd. There's no shortage of private capital. So they're more likely to invest in companies currently struggling to attract investment; ie those more likely to fail. And they have no real‐world skills to add.
Our £1.1 billion plan is backing the British firms developing the next generation of AI hardware.
So we get more jobs, more growth, and more control over the technologies our future depends on.
I'm backing Britain because I believe in Britain.
This weekend I met a Spanish couple who have left Barcelona for the Netherlands. When I asked them what prompted their move they said, "Safety. Barcelona is no longer safe even for residents, not just tourists".
Atlanta vs Barcelona. Please don’t pretend to tell me that Atlanta is a prettier city. Higher population density can lead to wonderful urban outcomes if done right.
He is absolutely right on the first duty. Although I would describe that as 'secure'. External. Their next duty is to keep citizens safe. Internal. And, most importantly, however unfashionable, to protect children and women. A gross dereliction of duty on both so far this century
The first duty of any government is to keep our country safe.
That's why we're delivering the biggest sustained increase in defence spending since the Cold War.
In a genteel bar in posh Amsterdam a group of Gen Zeds sitting outside accidently tip over their drinks. Broken glasses and so on. They stood up, paralysed. Just looking at their mess. No idea what to do. Then just watched as older people around them sorted it out.
I magine dating someone for 3 years through / after uni, you live together in a flat share then break up and they now have access to half your pension 😂
I bet 3.4million of the 3.5 million couples don't actually want the legal ramifications of marriage & why they didn't get...
