The conference brought together experts and practitioners from multiple sectors working on the problem of MSL in Brazil, including detection of MSL, criminal and civil prosecution of MSL, rehabilitation of victims and efforts to reduce vulnerability in various communities.
GLUE Scientist @llrausch presented an overview of cattle traceability as a tool for combating slave labor and other socio-environmental crimes at the International Conference for Best Practices in Combatting Slave Labor, hosted by @ABAesq and @PADForg, held in Belém, Brazil.
30 million people are currently subject to #ModernSlaveLabor (MSL). Since 1995, over 60k people have been rescued from MSL in Brazil, with 30% of those working on cattle ranches.
Public enforcement, transparency, traceability and supply-chain sanctions are needed to end MSL.

Very happy to have my paper with Daniel Phaneuf, Lisa Rausch, and Holly Gibbs out in @GEC_Journal! Fun journey to better understand the implicit value of formal property rights in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes in Brazil.

The economy isn’t closed, people. The economic activities we’re doing - childcare, cooking, cleaning etc - just aren’t considered valuable by most economists. #feminist#economics#Covid_19
@ryangrim Not that it changes the overall story but the government doesn’t monitor the soy moratorium and it has nothing to do with illegality of deforestation.
Cattle ranchers and others burn the Amazon every year at this time, but this deserves the attention it is getting. This year they seem to be doing it more and are emboldened by the political situation in Brazil. https://t.co/IuvQlOdhF8
