Angus Maddison posits that India was roughly a quarter of the world’s economic output in the 17th century. And half of it came from a single subah, Bengal. Making Bengal the wealthiest territory on the planet, accounting for roughly 12% of the world’s GDP.

In simpler words, Bengal was the richest province of the richest empire on Earth. The Mughals called it the “Paradise of Nations.”

And yet, a single monsoon failure in 1670 ended up starving 90,000 to death in nearby Patna alone. That’s THE largest metropolis in Eastern India at the time with a population of 200,000. The draught took out nearly half of it.

The famine of 1670-71 saw desperate men and women resorting to selling their children into slavery just to stay alive. There are documented accounts of people surviving on grass and leaves and streets littered with unclaimed corpses.

So how does a single bad year end up doing so much harm to a nation with so much wealth? Was there no rainy-day reserve?

And that’s where the distinction between “Mughal” and “India” become important.

India was not wealthy.

The Mughals were.

Between 1650 and 1680 alone, the Mughals concluded FIVE major vanity projects across the subcontinent, including one in Dhaka. When Aurangzeb commissioned the Badshahi Mosque of Lahore, the world’s largest of the time, the famine was IN SESSION.

An expression like “25% of global GDP” paints a picture of prosperity. It helps you credit the Mughals for making India the mythical “golden bird” of legends.

That’s a lie.

The Mughals did not enrich India.

India enriched the Mughals.

Unwillingly.

And at a devastating cost.

Expired meat, fish & milk found in Bengaluru’s top luxury hotels.

30 teams inspected 26 three-star & five-star hotels across BBMP limits today. 35 food samples collected for lab testing.

Hotels where food was seized:

• The Lalit Ashok – 76 kg meat, 200 kg vegetables & 32 litres expired milk

• Shangri-La Bengaluru – 15 kg meat

• Four Seasons Bengaluru – 19 kg meat

• Vivanta Whitefield – 3 kg expired bakery products

• Taj Yeshwantpur – 72 kg meat/fish

• Radisson Blu (The Atria) – 105 kg expired food (50 kg chicken, 25 kg meat, 23 kg fish, 7 kg vegetables)

Violations included expired food, fungal growth, unhygienic kitchens, misbranding, FSSAI labelling violations and improper veg/non-veg storage. Notices issued; further action to follow after lab reports. #Bengaluru #FoodSafety

British Empire did pass the Slave Trade Act (1807) & Slavery Abolition Act (1833), framing Britain primarily as the "ender of slavery"...but a few fun facts:

- When the British Parliament passed the Slavery Abolition Act 1833, it compensated the slave owners, not the freed individuals (£20 Million Payout)

- The British govt borrowed £20 million to compensate 46K British slave owners for loss of "property". This amounted to 40% of the British govt's entire annual budget at the time. But they did not bother much because anyway during that time they were busy looting India.

- The loan raised by the Treasury to pay off slave owners was so vast that British taxpayers were still paying off the interest until 2015.
