A significant milestone for Gujarat!
For the first time, a Training of Trainers workshop for the All India Tiger Estimation 2026 was conducted at Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary, bringing together over 100 participants from across the state.
The workshop focused on strengthening the capacity of frontline forest officers through comprehensive training on AITE protocols. Participants were equipped with essential ecological monitoring techniques, including sign surveys and line transect methods for estimating tigers, co-predators, and prey species.
In addition, hands-on sessions were conducted on the use of the M-STrIPES mobile application, enabling accurate, real-time data collection and monitoring in the field.

Release of Publications : “Status of Elephants in India: DNA-based Synchronous All India Population Estimation of Elephants (SAIEE)” presents a comprehensive overview of the current status, distribution, and population trends of wild elephants across India, based on the Synchronous All India Elephant Estimation, or SAIEE 2021–25. Through extensive field surveys, camera trapping, and genetic mark–recapture methods, applied within a spatially explicit framework, the study provides a detailed and scientifically grounded understanding of elephant populations across different habitats.
It also establishes a baseline for future work on the genetic prioritization of elephant populations across the country, while the spatial abundance data will help guide efforts to manage and reduce human–elephant conflict more effectively. Beyond the data and analysis, this report highlights the ecological importance of elephants and the urgent need to address growing conservation challenges linked to habitat loss and fragmentation. The insights it offers will play a key role in shaping future conservation planning and policy, helping ensure that elephants continue to thrive as an essential part of India's natural heritage.

First session of Day 2 of the Training of Trainers workshop at @PenchMP for #AITE6 featured a field exercise on Phase I & III data collection. Participants practiced using @MSTrIPES mobile application to record tiger signs via sign surveys and estimate prey density through line transects. The NTCA Tiger Cell @wii_india team demonstrated deployment of camera traps for monitoring tigers & leopards, along with genetic data collection using scat and pellet samples. A hands-on, knowledge-rich session ensuring scientific rigor in the estimation process.
