Demand for Immediate Resignation of Officials Involved in the Trial of H.E. Simon Ekpa

When United States authorities accuse members of the Nigerian regime of terrorism, they are directly or indirectly informing the international community that those individuals are engaged in terrorist activities. By implication, any foreign authority that collaborates with such elements must also be subject to scrutiny.

The Finnish authorities worked with the same Nigerian regime officials to prosecute and jail H.E. Simon Ekpa; a man who has consistently spoken out against terrorist actions carried out by elements within the Nigerian regime. This raises serious concerns.

According to reports, the Finnish authorities alleged that H.E. Simon Ekpa spoke against the Fulani tribe. However, there is no credible evidence that he has ever spoken against any ethnic group. His statements have been directed at Fulani terrorists; not at the Fulani people as a tribe. Criticizing terrorist actors must not be deliberately misrepresented as attacking an entire ethnic community.

If, after what many observers consider a deeply flawed and shambolic trial, no official accepts responsibility or resigns, one could reasonably question the integrity of Finland’s judicial system. Continued silence or lack of accountability may lead many to conclude that Finland has abandoned the principles of justice and rule of law. Under such circumstances, Biafrans may feel compelled to consider peaceful civic measures, including calls to boycott Finland and Finnish products for the foreseeable future.

Justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done.
