Innovation didn’t start with us. And it won’t end with us either.

The @marine_zero team is proud to be part of a global community of maritime innovators, applying our creative, technical, and engineering expertise to rethink how we power vessels and ports on the journey to zero emissions.

But innovation isn’t just about what is happening right now. It doesn’t belong to a single era, or to one product or technology. It is not a one-off event. Innovation is a mindset – an ongoing continuum. One that builds on the achievements, infrastructure, and legacy of those who came before.

And for those of us working in maritime today, this is just our chapter within that story.

That’s one reason why we’re delighted to be involved in Maritime Heritage, Maritime Futures (MHMF) – a skills programme led by the education team at The Danny.

Built in Birkenhead in 1903, SS Daniel Adamson is a powerful reminder of what ‘cutting edge’ in maritime once looked like. Her steam boiler was, in its time, at the forefront of engineering and power generation – just as new alternative fuel solutions are today.

Through the MHMF skills programme, The Danny has become a living classroom – continuing to shape what comes next. As part of the programme, our communications lead, @mcwattlou , visited the Museum of Liverpool to speak with business and marketing students from @crontoncoll. They discussed the importance of maritime and decarbonisation, and looked at the breadth of opportunities across the sector – not just in STEM, but in business, marketing and communications too.

Maritime innovation didn’t start with emissions targets, digitisation, or alternative fuels. But its future will depend on the interest, skills, and ambition of the next generation – and that starts with showing them how exciting ‘what comes next’ really is.

As part of our involvement with MHMF, Louise set the students a challenge: to develop a marketing campaign for maritime decarbonisation, designed to engage their peers with the power and potential of careers in our sector.

The MHMF programme is doing important work, and we’re grateful to The Danny’s learning and participation manager, Cathriona Bourke, for inviting us to be part of it. We look forward to seeing the students’ ideas come to life later this year.

Efficiency: The Foundation of Decarbonisation — that was a clear takeaway from a day of insightful conversations and presentations last week at the Creating Sustainable Harbours event organised by @SouthHams_DC with the support of @SDMarineAcademy and @maritimeukSW.

Our MD, @TMunn, delivered a thought-provoking presentation exploring the real-world challenges of electrifying smaller vessels and diverse fleets. A key message: electrification must enhance - not compromise - operational efficiency. Tim's presentation explored:

- The limitations of battery energy density
- The critical role of accurate operational data
- The complexities of converting existing vessels

At @marine_zero, we’re focused on removing the barriers to electrification through practical, data-driven solutions like MAP and our wider technology suite. These tools help operators understand energy demand across real operating scenarios and assess the feasibility of available energy supply.

An example of this approach in action is our work on the Torpoint Ferry Bridge to Zero project. By analysing real-world onboard and shore-side energy data, we’re generating insights that will support not only Torpoint’s transition to zero emissions, but the transition strategies for similar ferry services across the UK and beyond.

Through the installation of sensors and data systems, we’re able to:

• Securely transmit data to the cloud
• Deliver live dashboards and actionable insights

As part of the Torpoint Bridge to Zero project, our team has completed detailed feasibility work, identifying five energy transmission options for further assessment:

- Hydrogen fuel system
- Fixed power cable on reel
- Portable battery modules
- Automated fast-charging
- ‘Charge at Anchor’ system

Each option is being assessed for its ability to replace diesel-generated power for the ferries’ propulsion systems, while maintaining operational resilience.

A central focus of the project is the use of real-time operational data. Multiple sensors have now been deployed across the fleet, providing detailed insight into power demand under real operating conditions.

This data is being analysed jointly by @marine_zero and the @PlymUni using advanced modelling techniques to inform the next phase of system design and assess how low-carbon technologies could be integrated with existing operations.

The Bridge to Zero team is also evaluating supplementary renewable generation options, such as compact wind turbines, which could contribute up to 300kWh daily - approximately 20% of a vessel’s energy requirement.

Torpoint 'Bridge to Zero' is led by @marine_zero, working with project partners @tamarcrossing and @PlymUni. The project is funded by UK government through the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK Shore) programme in the @transportgovuk. @innovateuk, part of UK Research and Innovation, is the main delivery partner for UK SHORE interventions.

We’re proud to announce that @marine_zero's Operations Director, Andy Hurley, will be speaking at @seawork 2025 in Southampton.

Andy will take part in the session Onshore Power Supply – Connection and Investment in Pursuit of Decarbonisation Goals, scheduled from 11:45 to 13:00 on Wednesday, 11 June 2025. His presentation will focus on Electric Thames, a pioneering maritime decarbonisation project transforming how vessels can be powered along the River Thames. As a key partner in the initiative, Marine Zero is helping demonstrate how onshore power supply can enable low-emission operations, reduce reliance on conventional fuels, and support grid flexibility through vessel-2-grid technology. The project is a collaboration between @marine_zero, @UKPowerNetworks, LCP Delta, @evdotenergy, and the @LondonPortAuth.

@marine_zero at the @UKPowerNetworks - Net Zero Networks Day

Alongside Ben Turner from @UKPowerNetworks Networks and Robin Kaloustin from LCP Delta, Andy Hurley from @marine_zero presented a progress update for the Electric Thames Project - Alpha Phase, one of the UK’s leading maritime decarbonisation initiatives.

The presentation covered key areas of the project, including the work done on energy needs assessments and modelling for river operators, vessel retrofitting and electrification, and vessel-2-grid technology. The team also highlighted the project’s scalability and potential for replication across the UK on other inland waterways.

By demonstrating pragmatic and scalable emission reduction opportunities in the maritime sector, the ground-breaking Electric Thames project is challenging long-held assumptions about what is possible. The project is supported by the funding secured from @ofgem's SIF competition through @innovateuk.

It’s great to see mainstream broadcasters taking an increasing interest in the maritime sector.
In this episode of @BBCRadio4 science documentary series Rare Earth, environmental journalist Tom Heap and physicist Helen Czerski consider ‘How to Clean Up the Shipping Industry’.
The programme neatly captures the scope of the challenge, with an engaging discussion around the pros and cons of various alternative fuels, including hydrogen, battery power, methanol, and ammonia – and the importance of considering ALL emissions, rather than just CO2 when we’re talking about clean maritime energy. ‘Maritime decarbonisation’ is very much only part of the story!

Heading into day 2 of the @_InnovationZero World Congress at London Olympia with ‘renewed energy’ after yesterday's standout session with Greg Jackson, founder and CEO of @OctopusEnergy.

His bold vision for disrupting traditional energy models was genuinely inspiring, exactly the kind of transformative thinking and passion we need to see more of, across all industries, to address our climate challenges.

Another day 1 highlight was the session led by Steven Lua and Haseena Bheekhun from @Unitrove , who showcased their groundbreaking Multi Fuel Liquid Hydrogen Refueller. Great example of the kind of bold innovation that will help accelerate our transition to clean maritime energy and, ultimately, achieve zero emissions.
