I just finished @bootdotdev Memory Management with C course.
Working primarily with Python and SQL as a Data Engineer, it was incredibly rewarding to dive into a lower-level language like C. I especially liked building a garbage collector from scratch.
(🧵1/11) For the past year and a half, I've been investigating OpenAI and Sam Altman for @NewYorker. With my coauthor @andrewmarantz, I reviewed never-before-disclosed internal memos, obtained 200+ pages of documents related to a close colleague, including extensive private notes, and interviewed more than 100 people.
OpenAI was founded on the premise that A.I. could be the most dangerous invention in human history—and that its C.E.O. would need to be a person of uncommon integrity. We lay out the most detailed account yet of why Altman was ousted out by board members and executives who came to believe he lacked that integrity, and ask: were they right to allege that he couldn't be trusted?
A thread on some of of our findings:
Who will give us this universal income? The government?
If this is the case the government would dictate each person's means of living. Meaning, total loss of an individual's sovereignty and freedom.
Amazon is holding a mandatory meeting about AI breaking its systems. The official framing is "part of normal business." The briefing note describes a trend of incidents with "high blast radius" caused by "Gen-AI assisted changes" for which "best practices and safeguards are not yet fully established." Translation to human language: we gave AI to engineers and things keep breaking?
The response for now? Junior and mid-level engineers can no longer push AI-assisted code without a senior signing off. AWS spent 13 hours recovering after its own AI coding tool, asked to make some changes, decided instead to delete and recreate the environment (the software equivalent of fixing a leaky tap by knocking down the wall). Amazon called that an "extremely limited event" (the affected tool served customers in mainland China).
@Fidias0 Greenland is not ruled by a dictator. If it wasn't for the US Venezuela will have had to collapse to be free of Chavism. @MariaCorinaYA will probably replace Delcy when elections start. Delcy is needed for the transition that is it.
@SenSanders I'll ask you something else, what have you done to help our people? Why do you critize a move that is net positive to humanity, but did not do anything to help yourself?
@SenSanders Quid pro quo. Nothing is free, but let me tell you we Venezuelans will gladly take that deal. What Trump did made 36 million Venezuelans feel hopeful again, feel that they cane be free of the 30 years of oppression we've faced.
