HILLARY & CHELSEA

In early January 1997, the Clintons and entourage (including me) were going to St. Thomas, the Virgin Islands, for a presidential vacation. (This is the infamous trip where Bill and Hill were filmed ‘dancing on the beach’). The trip had been planned for weeks and most of the logistics were set. But as soon as Air Force One touched down in St. Thomas, I knew something was amiss. Mrs. Clinton was very visibly upset. She went off on her immediate staff essentially screwing herself into the top of the aircraft. Loud, four-letter words were bouncing around the fuselage. I approached to get involved and help. Always a dicey proposition with Hillary. Into the breach I went once more.

The staff quickly learned that Chelsea, a senior in high school, had left her backpack full of text books in the hotel room in Hilton Head, South Carolina, where the Clintons had been attending their annual Renaissance Weekend, a gathering of Democrat government, business, media, and academic leaders. But it wasn’t Chelsea’s fault, of course, because, according to Hillary, it was everybody’s fault EXCEPT for Chelsea. Hillary was specifically hell bent on blaming the president’s valets. Which was sad and unfair.

The president is served by career Navy enlisted men as valets. These valets, Filipino by birth, have a long, proud tradition of serving the first family in the White House going back at least to 1909. In my experience, they were loyal, devoted, impeccable employees. They worked diligently to attend to every detail—no matter how small. But, right now, Hillary had them squarely in her gunsights.

It seemed to me amazing that the idea of holding Chelsea responsible—Chelsea would soon be a freshman at Stanford—never crossed Hillary’s mind.

Kelly Craighead, Hillary’s personal aide, asked me to find a way to get the books down to St. Thomas tout de suite. Chelsea had finals approaching and “needed to study.” We sprang into Hillary crisis mode.

I called back to Hilton Head, catching my fellow military aide before she caught her return flight to D.C. She sounded the alarm, gathered remaining White House staffers, and scurried to find the backpack. Once the backpack was safely in hand, we dispatched one of the president’s valets via a commercial airliner to deliver the goods. He landed and brought them directly to the home the Clintons where staying in. The books were on Chelsea’s bedside table before she woke up.

Just another day in the Clinton White House—the quick assignment of blame, and a relatively minor issue mushrooming quickly out of control. Just another day living with Hillary Clinton. (And, yes, I was there for this photo shoot).

It’s always bad. It’s always something to worry about. You people spend your lives like Chicken Littles running scared over the weather.

If you have lived in Florida for more than 50 years, you should know that you have seen this before. This isn’t the first year that no hurricanes have hit Florida. And it won’t be the last you get a break either.

It happened just last year.

And no hurricanes made landfall there between Wilma on October 24, 2005, and Hermine on September 2, 2016. That is almost 11 years with no hits.

For the first time in 112 years, there have been ZERO Atlantic hurricanes by this point in the calendar year.

The last time this happened was in 1914, two years after the R.M.S. Titanic sank. 1914 was the year that my great-grandmother was born. It was also the year World War I broke out, and when the Panama Canal officially opened to traffic. Charlie Chaplin directed his first film, Caught in a Cabaret, that year too.

Year-to-date accumulated cyclone energy (ACE), an integrated metric that accounts for tropical cyclone frequency, intensity, and duration, is lowest on record in the satellite era (since 1966) with 6.3 units generated. Overall since 1851, North Atlantic ACE is lowest year-to-date since 1929 (although pre-satellite era data should be taken with a grain of salt).

To have a TOP FIVE end-of-year total overall, Atlantic ACE must remain below 18.1 units. To have a TOP FIVE satellite-era end-of-year total, ACE must remain below 34.4 units. The latter is almost certainly doable I think. A top five finish since 1851 is going to be hard to accomplish, but is possible. October will ultimately decide our ranking.

Interestingly and perhaps unsurprisingly, of the top ten lowest year-to-date ACE totals, all were either El Niño or ENSO netural.

Six years ago, The Washington Post said that Atlantic hurricanes seasons are going to become much worse due to global warming. Stronger storms, especially near the coast. Hyperactive years like 2020 was said to be a “harbinger of the future.”

Last week, The Washington Post reported that the lack of hurricanes in the Atlantic this year is also potentially because of global warming.

Climate change has become a convenient scapegoat for climastrologists blame everything that happens with the weather on. They can't ever be wrong.

“Big Oil” does not set the market price for gasoline and diesel.

Prices are largely determined by crude oil futures, as well as refining costs and distribution. Taxes on fuel can also add a significant chunk to the price per gallon depending on the state you live in. Blue states have higher tax rates.

That said, why are you outraged about gas and diesel prices? Isn’t this what you wanted to force a “green energy transition” to avert climate catastrophe?

Initial thoughts after the #GoPackGo win:

Jager Burton won’t be removed as the starting LG moving forward. He came in and did everything #Packers fans had hoped for and the offense got going and was more consistent once he was inserted in at guard.

The @Packers defense is for real. Although the final score was misleading against Minnesota, the defense played lights out and they did once again today. The defense kept them in the game.

Lucas Van Ness had his coming out party against the Jets. This is the guy they envisioned when they drafted him in the first round a few years ago. This was his best game by far since entering the NFL.

The running game is horrible and that needs to be fixed right away. With the mind the way it is, and with soon to be clarity in the Josh Jacobs situation, it should improve moving forward. You can’t win games being one dimensional and no threat of a rushing attack hinders the offense.

Cisse had another really good game, you see him progressing each of the last two weeks and should continue to get better and better.

Trey Smack has solved the Packers kicker issue since the retirement of Mason Crosby.

Sky Moore has also solved the Packers punt/kick returner issues (as well as special teams as a whole has really taken a huge jump so far in this season). His ability to flip the field and create a field position with returns has been a low-key weapon for the team thus far.

If we’re being honest, so far the rookies have had a way bigger impact (and earlier then expected) than I think anyone had hoped so far.
