Ilya Sutskever said something on a podcast that is almost wild.
"A human being lacks a huge amount of knowledge. Instead, we rely on continual learning."
Every AI model today learns during training and then freezes. Like a student who studies for years, takes the exam, and never learns anything new again.
Ilya is saying that's the wrong target entirely. The industry overshot.
His vision: "I produce a superintelligent 15-year-old. They don't know very much at all. A great student, very eager. You go and be a programmer. You go and be a doctor. Go and learn."
Not an AI that already knows everything. An AI that can learn anything. And keeps learning after you deploy it.
This week NVIDIA saw his research and put $5 billion behind it.
Everyone else is racing to make AI know more. Ilya is trying to make AI learn like we do.

So much more rewarding to actually get something inventive be made, rather than just be spoken about.
And the capability of universities to enable students do that goes back to the presence of the industrial base.
In most countries, earning a PhD means writing a dissertation.
Hundreds of pages of theory, research, and citations that very few people will ever read.
China decided to try something different.
Under a law passed in 2024, select universities can now award engineering doctorates based on physical prototypes, new techniques, or major installations instead of traditional papers. The rule is straightforward: build something that works in real life and at scale, and you can graduate.
The first cohort has already finished.
Zheng Hehui earned his doctorate by designing reinforced steel blocks that snap together like Lego to form massive bridge pylons. His invention is already in use on the Changtai Yangtze River Bridge, the world's longest cable-stayed bridge.
Wei Lianfeng became the first practical PhD graduate at Harbin Institute of Technology by developing vacuum laser welding processes for the Nuclear Power Institute of China.
Another candidate built a fire-fighting system for large seaplanes.
At least 11 engineers have now earned their doctorates through this route.
Since 2022, more than 60 universities and 100 companies have collaborated, selecting over 20,000 students for practical doctorate programmes.
The goal is to close the gap between academic theory and industrial application, particularly in fields like artificial intelligence and semiconductors.
One student built a bridge. Another welded nuclear components.
And they got the same three letters as everyone else.

A method to actually *reverse* AGE CML damage that has been considered irreversible until now.
The engineered enzyme CMLase, developed with Calico, acts like a “lawnmower” to remove abundant advanced glycation end-products (such as CML) from long-lived proteins. This restores original lysine residues in ex vivo human aorta, skin, and lens tissues from elderly donors.
Literally rewinding the clock on age-related tissue changes and damage back to a decades more youthful condition. And the method appears to be able to be applied to many different areas of human aging.
ChatGPT agrees that it worked on AGE CML that had accumulated naturally for decades in human tissue:
In the human lens: a 45% reduction measured directly by LC-MS/MS; 78% by antibody assay.
75-year-old aorta and arterial tissue: more than a 70% reduction and reversal of damage.
Elderly skin: more than 55% reduction, bringing the measured CML staining *below that found in 31-year-old skin*.
That last result borders on astonishing: the method chemically rejuvenated old human skin tissue *past* the level of considerably younger tissue.
And this is a methodology of directed evolution of an enzyme tailored to solve a specific problem and reverse it. Like CRISPR, this new tool is something that will have many uses.

This could be available through medical tourism in Panama and Thailand in 5 to 7 years. US and other more restrictive environments in 7 to 10 years.
As @rand_longevity often says, “just stay alive” for the next 10 years. Then decide what you want to do with your second life.
