Need some motivation during this downtime from racing? Why not focus on the skills needed to stay healthy and run faster! New class registration is up at https://t.co/40Pkcp85pc https://t.co/2EwxgU8bGX
If you’re wondering where ‘Outside the Lines’ is this week — my weekly email to the @ALTIS list — well, I forgot to write it 😬
Apologies — it will be in your inbox in the AM!
Here’s a teaser —>
“It’s much better to think holistically about how your musculature works rather than focusing only on your core.”

“... rather than being a risk factor, running may actually be protective against osteoarthritis.” Proper training and a mindful stride - prescription to avoid overuse injuries. https://t.co/yCzYbOVo8M @mindfulstrides
Amazing first Mastermind session this morning with @PfaffSC ! THANK YOU for this opportunity @ALTIS ! Movement mechanics was today’s topic - how to develop your coaching eye using Kinograms.
In sporting education we need to do a better job of teaching how to see and understand movement. We do a really good job in the weightroom but all bets are off when we leave those walls into an open environment. @PfaffSC@StuartMcMillan1@ALTIS@Thorne_Research#ThorneACP
Thx Rob! It certainly has been my own experience and those I teach that technique matters - I’m 51, still logging 120+kms/week/training/racing have been for 10+ yrs no injuries. You’ve certainly helped too! Technique should be a part of the whole injury-prevention puzzle. #logic
Not just a dirty secret , but many coaches don’t believe technique matters for runners. All other sports take this into consideration and actively teach the basic mechanics of said sport. Runners in #yyj can call on @1fastdiva Marilyn Arsenault to learn proper running mechanics.
Maintaining proper form to avoid injury is just as important in running as it is in every sport. If you can’t hold good form due to lack of know-how, fitness or fatigue, you need to load appropriately and stop (take breaks to regroup) BEFORE your form breaks down. #awareness
Recalibrates the spine’s alignment, re-establishes proper head, neck spine relationship/body’s elasticity, releases accumulated tension, allows gravity to have a beneficial effect on diaphragm/rib cage to work more efficiently. @HollyhockLife#healthyrunning#constructiverest
Some great discussion on breathing/running - training to expand LOWER rib cage/lower the diaphragm 2maximize breath intake (w/o excessive tension) is very helpful to an endurance athlete IMO. Singers & brass/woodwind players spend years developing quick yet deep intake of breath.
In Austin last week, I sat down with the @roguerunning podcast crew. They'd already had me on to discuss Endure a few months ago, so this time they dove right into some deeper (and tougher) questions, like my hesitance to give practical takeaways:

Excited to hit the road tomorrow to teach “Healthy Running with Mindful Strides” @hollyhocklife! If you’re a last minute planner or this just caught your eye, it’s still not too late to register for this all-inclusive 5-day running retreat. Link to all information is ⬆️ in bio!
“Slow it down. There are no shortcuts. Build awareness. Practice.” @1fastdiva we are remembering what a joy last year was. We transformed not only our approach to running, but to everyday movement! Can't wait to see you again on Aug 10th! @charleneklo https://t.co/TyWdba3Byn
Did you always love track & field @RunningRoom? Our Comm Coordinator gets real on why she "is not a runner" starting with that darn 100-metre dash: https://t.co/Kq6XZuNfJi
A great reason to focus on how you contact the ground. You DO have a choice...it just takes mindful practice - gradual increments on every run until it becomes engrained.
STUDY: Real-time feedback of tibial shock attenuation was provided in high risk/high injury runners - In 1 year = reduced injury outcomes impact loading can be reduced through gait retraining - https://t.co/y4rCBio0Wq
The Danish handball team tried a sports-specific version of mindfulness training. After 6 wks, they improved reaction time, accuracy, and agility compared to the control group. I know mindfulness has been overhyped, but this seems pretty interesting. https://t.co/sjD5Fs162e
Running well requires SKILL - join me @HollyhockLife August 10-15 on beautiful Cortes Island and learn to run with poise and ease. All levels and abilities welcome! Info: https://t.co/BPqVrLzia7 #running#form#awareness#rungetaway@SauconyCanada @PISEworld
