I don't think people realise the depth of the tragedy that has happened. For me this is just unimaginable.
A flight full of people that took off from Ahmedabad went down in flames killing nearly everyone on it. Including infants and children. Whole families wiped out (I find some solace in knowing that some families, all of them, died together, and none was left behind to live a life full of emptiness)
The ball of metal and fire then showered down on a major medical college hostel and canteen killing many undergraduate students, interns and senior residents.
Students were taking their lunch break, waiting to go back to class or the hospital to learn and attend to patients.
They had spent the majority of their lives reading and learning and painstakingly cracking the medical entrance exams are living their dream.
Some of them would have recently joined, taking loans and sacrificing so much. Including their parents. It was all of their dreams that went down in flames and rubble.
I see many accounts throwing conspiracy theories, playing the blame game, indulging in divisive politics, creating misinformation about what happened and others sharing gory images and details from the tragedy.
I wish we were more civilized and caring. We are humans first and humanism eclipses everything else. Let us share resources that can be helpful to those in need and their families.

Join us in cheering on Dr. Leyfman who will be presenting the 1st of 3 exciting sessions at this year’s ASCO Annual Meeting! His talk will explore opportunities and equity challenges in social media–driven cancer awareness.
Dear @SecKennedy@POTUS
Over 4,000 trainees in a SINGLE YEAR are international graduates on a J1 visa. If a doctor sees 5,000 patients in a year, this is 20 MILLION Americans who have zero replacement. They have MUCH more research and much higher USMLE scores.
Thank you for this privilege
@acgme@AmerMedicalAssn
America cannot replace them.
For others, please let everyone know how important the J1 visa program is.
3/ 🚀 Fun fact: Did you know 90% of sarcomas rely on a single enzyme, ASS1? Dr. Van Tine’s discovery is now reshaping how we fight these tumors.
🧬 This session is your chance to dive deep into science that could change lives.

In 2017 when I started seeing patients with severe liver disease for which we could not find a cause for, and eventually over a year we found that it was due to traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicines and herbal and dietary supplements, there was one case that stood out. A young mother who died of liver failure after using Herbalife supplements for 2 months.
I went on to publish that report in an official journal of a national Indian hepatology society, the first from Asia Pacific continent. Herbalife came in with all it's muscle and legal might and threatened me, my co-authors and the Indian hepatology society president and journal editorial board, to remove the "defamatory" publication. I did not budge and told them I'll see them in court. But the journal editorial board and then president decided it was a fight they did not want. People were anyway going to die due to ill informed healthcare choices and this report or the education on it, was not going to change anything.
At a senior level Gastroenterology & Hepatology decision meeting, they did not allow me, to express my side of the story, the strong evidence that I had to keep the peer-reviewed publication, and, the great public health concern that herbal and dietary supplements were killing people from avoidable liver failure, and, the need for doctors to publish and educate on this grave topic.
A VERY SENIOR Gastroenterology & Hepatology professor took me to the side of the breakfast room and told me:
"I know you are enthusiastic, as I was your age. But even if you realize that the prime minister is a fool, you don't go shouting the prime minister is a fool. You keep quite and join others in saying the prime minister is not a fool, even though deep inside you know it is not. So do your 9-5 work and be happy."
- He was working in a central government program at the time.
I knew then this was going to be a long lonely fight. I have never had peer support from colleagues and specialist societies during the time I had to face deep harassments from my public health education on complementary and alternative medicines and related liver health occasions over the years. When I started publishing more on this topic and in high impact journals, instead of becoming an ally, I became a threat to my peers - so much that since last 6 years, none of the specialist level national hepatology meetings in India, conducted by Indian societies would ever put up the topic on herbal liver injury due to Ayush and dietary supplements. Not a single one. I was never invited to speak on this topic at national stage too. It seemed some of the senior professors who ran the show, lacked a spine and felt insecure when faced with this topic and intimidated by my presence.
In due course, as I had told my senior professor at the time, complementary and alternative medicine became the most common cause of liver failure due to drug-induced liver injury in Asia and second most common in India.
But they are still not bothered. The evidence I generated on Ayush and liver injury and the legal battles with herbal and dietary supplements company that was born out of that loneliness, is etched in time. I went on to become The Liver Doc who spent personal hard earned money to test alternative medicine and educate results to the public...and the professor who "advised me to lay low and quit" retired and became inconsequential.
I knew that the majority of Indian doctors would do jack sh*t for the public when it came to public health education and preventative medicine. They're just 9-5 job businessmen.
My radicalisation towards evidence based medicine and the knowledge it brought to the good of public came full circle.
