Some Mastodon servers are under very heavy load during the past few days due to the extreme spike in user numbers. Remember, no matter which server you sign-up on, you get access to the same decentralized network. You don't have to choose the popular ones!

@dabeaz Think of it like email. Mastodon uses the ActivityPub protocol and you can connect to any other service using that protocol. You're not picking a tribe, just a host. I host my own server, so I run it and pay, but there are lots of open servers run by people in the community.
