White-nose syndrome has led to the significant decline of insect-eating bats since its introduction to North America in 2006. In U.S. counties where it has been detected, farmers compensated for the loss of insect-eating bats by increasing insecticide use by 31.1%, according to a new Science analysis. What’s more, human infant mortality increased by 7.9% in these same counties, attributed to the harmful effects of insecticide runoff.
