Introducing 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐧𝐭, a JavaScript engine written entirely in Go.

This project started with a problem we’ve been living with at Robomotion for years.

Our RPA robots are written in Go, but users can run JavaScript inside Function nodes. Those scripts execute across millions of messages on Linux, Windows, Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, and Raspberry Pi devices.

Over the last seven years, we’ve used four different JavaScript engines.

We started with 𝐎𝐭𝐭𝐨. Pure Go, but limited to ES5.

Then 𝐃𝐮𝐤𝐭𝐚𝐩𝐞. Still ES5, and now we had cgo and a C toolchain to deal with.

Then 𝐕𝟖 through v8go, which finally gave us modern JavaScript, but made cross-platform distribution increasingly difficult. We eventually maintained our own v8go fork just to run a current version of V8 consistently across every platform we support.

Then we hit a bigger problem.

Once our new Large Message Objects feature lifted the 16 MB compressed limit on node-to-node messages, Function nodes could suddenly receive payloads tens or even hundreds of megabytes in size.

Crossing the Go/C/V8 boundary meant copying that data multiple times.

On Windows, those temporary memory spikes could cause V8 to crash the entire process.

Not return an error.

𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐡.

Then Ant showed up on Hacker News:

“Show HN: Ant, a JavaScript runtime and ecosystem”

Ant’s JavaScript engine, Silver, was written in C.

That caught our attention.

C is close enough to Go that porting an engine looked much more realistic than designing and implementing a modern JavaScript engine from scratch.

And just recently, Bun had rewritten 535,000 lines of Zig into Rust using AI.

So we decided to try it.

Once the port worked, the project kept growing.

We started running Test262.

Then implementing the missing pieces.

Then Temporal.

Then Intl.

Then RegExp compatibility.

Then a baseline JIT for amd64 and arm64.

And somewhere along the way, it became 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐧𝐭.

Today, 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐧𝐭:

• is written in pure Go
• requires no cgo
• passes 𝟗𝟗.𝟒% of Test262, with nothing excluded
• includes Temporal and Intl
• has an opt-in baseline JIT for amd64 and arm64
• cross-compiles wherever Go does
• ships as a single static binary
• is already running customer JavaScript inside Robomotion robots in production

𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐧𝐭 is not trying to replace V8.

If you need an optimizing JIT for heavy compute workloads, V8 is still in another league.

𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐧𝐭 is built for a different problem:

Embedding a modern, highly compatible JavaScript engine inside Go applications without bringing an entire native toolchain along with it.

This release boosts debugging speed, adds AI code generation support to the New Designer, and delivers AI Agent improvements.

We’re finally ready to switch to the New Designer, which will become the default next week.

We’ve significantly improved our AI Agent capabilities. Package nodes can now connect directly as tools. We’ve also introduced an Agent Tools package for building generic agents.
