What followed was a joke. ₹5000 fine and an apology letter.

If a truck driver attempts to hit an elephant in india, it is treated as a highly severe, non bailable criminal offense. Under the Wild life (Protection) Act, 1972, the Asian Elephant is listed under Schedule I, which grants it the absolute highest level of legal protection.

Even if the driver "tries" to hit the elephant and fails, attempting to harm or disturb a protected animals carries the exact same weight as the act itself under Section 52 of the Act.
