Do you recognise the two Nobel Prize awarded physicists?
These photos were taken when physicists Paul Dirac and Richard Feynman attended the international scientific conference on General Relativity and Gravitation in July 1962 in Poland. Here they are seen in deep conversation – presumably about quantum physics. It is said that Feynman idolised Dirac and saw him as one of his heroes.
Dirac was awarded the physics prize in 1933 for formulating a fully relativistic quantum theory. The equation gave solutions that he interpreted as being caused by a particle equivalent to the electron, but with a positive charge. This particle, the positron, was later confirmed through experiments.
Fifteen years later (1948), in particular, Richard Feynman contributed to creating a new quantum electrodynamics by introducing Feynman diagrams: graphic representations of various interactions between different particles. These diagrams facilitate the calculation of interaction probabilities. Feynman received the physics prize in 1965.

Did you know that only one person has received the #NobelPrize in Physics twice? John Bardeen received the physics prize in 1956 for the discovery of the transistor effect and in 1972 for developing the theory of superconductivity.

#OnThisDay in 1822, Percy Shelley drowned off the coast of Italy. On the day of his death, the poet had gone out sailing on his boat, the 'Don Juan', off the coast of Lerici. But when a violent storm sprang up, Shelley – a poor swimmer – did not survive.

Leshan Giant Buddha, the biggest stone Buddha statue in the world at 233ft (71m) high. It is carved into a cliff face made of red sandstone in Leshan, Sichuan Province, China 🇨🇳
Buddha is situated at confluence of Min, Qingyi and Dadu rivers, where numerous shipping accidents had occurred. In 713 CE, a monk named Hai Tong decided to carve a Maitreya Buddha statue to watch over the river, a project that took 90 years, until 803 CE, to fully complete. The resulting Buddha was immense: Its fingers are 27ft (8.3m) long and shoulders are 92ft (28m) across, nearly size of a basketball court. At 23ft (7m) long, ears, made of wood covered in mud, were attached to sculpture in a wonder of ancient engineering. Statue was originally sheltered by a 13-story wooden structure but this was destroyed during Ming dynasty.
Buddha did stop lives being lost to the rivers, if only because rocks from the construction filled in the riverbed. Over time, erosion and air pollution took their toll, plants and fungi are growing on parts of the statue and acid rain has caused the nose to turn black. However, repairs and preservation efforts are ongoing, with a major restoration project having been completed in 2019.
Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996, along with Mount Emei, the site is considered of exceptional cultural significance since it is the place where Buddhism first became established on Chinese territory. Indeed, the first Buddhist temples in China were built in this area in 1st Century CE.

Clear-cut precision from Clara-Jumi Kang 🎻
As we gear up for this evening's performance of Sibelius's Violin Concerto at the Foundation Louis Vuitton in Paris, we're looking back to the last time we performed this iconic work with South Korean-German violinist Clara-Jumi Kang! 😍
Kang returns this March for performances in Canterbury and Bedford, where she'll join us for another masterpiece of the violin repertoire: Vaughan Williams's 'The Lark Ascending' ✨
