A group of parents met me today to express their heartfelt gratitude for supporting the 60 day age relaxation for Class 1 admissions in Karnataka. This decision will benefit around 2 lakh children.
Our government will always listen to people’s concerns, respond with sensitivity, and work with commitment for the welfare and future of every child.

@KommawarSwapnil There should be a 6 month optional window linked to cut-off date for which parents should be allowed to decide whether they want to start their kids schooling early or later.
Let people choose
@KommawarSwapnil I really don’t know why such a strict 6-year age cutoff is needed for Class 1. Kids who finished UKG are ready, but now face repeating a year just because of a few months difference. It feels unfair and stressful for them.
Bengaluru parents are asking the Karnataka government for a small change in Class 1 admission rules.
Right now, a child must be 6 years old to join Class 1 in 2026–27.
Many kids are missing the cut-off by just 1–3 months.
Parents are requesting a 90-day relaxation because:
• These children already completed Nursery, LKG and UKG
• Most were part of the COVID batch
• Without relaxation, they may have to repeat UKG
Parents say repeating one year will cause stress and extra fees.
The government says the 6-year rule is important for maturity and is linked to the new education policy.
As of now, no relaxation has been announced.
@TruthInvigil@ANI Parents don’t want to make kids loose their enthusiasm , curiosity and friends from class , Just because they born little late then other kids …
#WATCH | Bengaluru | A parent says, "We have been following up for the last two years, when we met the CM, Deputy CM and Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa. We have got assurance from the CM and the Deputy CM. As parents, we want the best for our children. These are children born during Covid times, and they have already faced a lot of emotional and psychological stress. Making them repeat a class will take a toll on their psychological health. We have full faith in the government of Karnataka. I am sure they will prove 90-day relaxation to more than 2 lakh affected children."
#WATCH | Bengaluru | Parents of children who do not meet the Class 1 age cut-off criteria (6 years of age) in the New Education Policy hold a demonstration requesting the Karnataka govt to give a 90-day relaxation to ensure children do not have to repeat UKG or Montessori
A parent says, "It is not a protest but a request to the govt to promote children who have completed three years of pre-primary education to Class 1. Our children are not meeting the 6-year age cut-off under the NEP. For children, repeating a class will cause psychological stress. The institutions are open to it and don't want children to repeat, but we are waiting for the govt to give relaxation in the rule or expedite SEP implementation."
When children have completed nursery, LKG, UKG and are developmentally ready to progress to 1st grade, holding them back and asking them to repeat UKG is unfair especially for June, July and August born children. Request @CMofKarnataka, @DKShivakumar,@Madhu_Bangarapp@KarnatakaEduSer@shalinirajnish to kindly provide 90 days relaxation for these children.
