From Renaissance workshops to AI labs:
Europe's innovation corridors are being redrawn. The same cities that financed da Vinci now architect Europe's tech sovereignty. What drives this 500-year continuum of European ingenuity?
Today marks a major step for Mistral: we’re announcing a €3B Series D, the largest equity round ever raised by a European tech company, just three years after launch.
We just raised €3B at a €21B valuation (Series D).
What I am most excited about is that this means more compute, better models, and we get to keep the weights open so companies can actually run this on their own machines.
Really glad to be here for it. more soon!!
The Rhine Group deserves to exist, Draghi and Collison in the same room, serious economists, actual operators with agency and academics. A higher standard than most things launched in Brussels.
However, 55 people, and the only one from a post-2004 accession state is Toomas Hendrik Ilves, who left office in 2016. No founders from the region, no operators. Siemiatkowski is Stockholm. Chrzanowski sits at Schwarz in Germany.
This already happened once. In 2024 ministers from Latvia, Poland and Czechia said the Draghi report had ignored their economies, and of the companies consulted only Bolt was from the region. Two years later the same principals have built a standing body with the same gap written into it.
What makes it awkward is that Garicano published the counter-argument himself. "The Two Europes" says growth is real in the east and stagnation is real in the west and south. If that is the diagnosis, drawing the membership almost entirely from the stagnant half is a strange way to act on it.
What companies i would love to see added as members: ElevenLabs, UiPath, Bolt, Wise, Vinted, Nord Security, InPost. In defence tech, where a lot of the urgency comes from, it is Frankenburg, Milrem, WB Group.
If your founding claim is that Europe is dying of incumbency, selecting your membership by incumbency is a tell.
The name does not help. A river running Switzerland, Germany, France, Netherlands, at the moment the growth and security argument is loudest from Warsaw, Tallinn and Vilnius. I would like to see a Danube version.
An announcement: Under the leadership of Mario Draghi and @patrickc we have set up the Rhine Group: policymakers, economists, entrepreneurs and business people pushing European reforms and the Draghi agenda.

Thoughtful piece in @TheEconomist on the UK AISI and London’s evolving role in the global AI landscape (with a nice quote from me). While there is more work to do, I remain optimistic about the UK as a hub for innovation—largely because of a balanced focus on progress and responsible development. In the long run, a thoughtful weighing of risks and benefits is the only way to build durable trust in the technology.

Europe is often portrayed as a continent in decline, squeezed between geopolitical rivals, held back by excessive regulation and struggling to keep pace with rapid technological change. In an op-ed in today's @FT, I explain why this narrative is misleading.
Europe has ideas, talent and strong institutions, but it lacks scale, says Executive Board member @Isabel_Schnabel.
By introducing a 28th regime, Europe can unlock its full potential, allowing firms to turn innovation into economic growth https://t.co/Jy5jUN8CRD
A startup in Wales is manufacturing diamonds for semiconductors in space. Yep… for real. 🏴🔥🇪🇺
To repeat this and to make this clear: @Space_Forge is literally building forges in space.
And if their vision works – and trust me this is not hyperbole – this will literally kickstart a whole new industry for humanity: Manufacturing in Space! 🧑🚀
Their mission? Grow ultra-pure crystals in orbit. Each worth a fortune.
Those crystals the foundation for chips of countless future technologies. Chips that power everything from 5G networks, to EVs, to future quantum systems.
Ok what the hell: Why satellites? The problem: On Earth, gravity frequently ruins the crystals while growing. Eg convection introduces tiny defects into every crystal we grow.
In orbit, with less effective gravity, those defects disappear.
The result: dramatically more efficient, more powerful and better functioning semiconductors.
Launching an actual satellite factory sounds completely insane, but exactly the kind of level of ambition we need here in Europe. 🔥
So naturally, I flew to Wales to find out how it works.
We were the first to tour their new facility – and you are the first to see it!
In the video we will be touring their clean rooms, see crystals grown, stand in their mission control, and learn how the two founders started this company after three pints in a pub.
I am not overhyping this when i say: Space Forge is literally the spearhead of a whole new industry for humanity…
This is the kind of level of WTH-ness we need here in Europe. 🙏❤️
Shoutout and thanks to Joshua, their founder, and his team for having us around!
