@peligrietzer It’s a nice distillation of the particular brand of American jaded exceptionalism and presentism. EPCOT level cultural references, blithe indifference or unawareness of the histories of other nations, bad at metaphors.
@PatrickCoffee Hearing that the Kelly clarkson store owner wrote dragons love tacos just hit me like a winter soldier activation code. She may be wrong, completely, entirely, unnecessarily wrong: the store must be destroyed.
@matthiasellis@mcmansionhell There was no golden age of reading. No pre phone. No nothing. We are unfortunately at or near the golden age and it only looks so ugly because more people are in the picture.
@IsaacLHarris Bill Simmons [more bleary eyed than usual]: I’ll tell ya. Wod Larry bird put up w Kevin McHale starting a sub stack? F no. No way. Is it aloud? Is it allowed? Maybe? Maybe! But what is this doing to our sport? My problem w alcohol is only 80th pct on my block. Next up: Pearl Jam.
@RadishHarmers My fear is we lose this moment of cultural hyper literacy. Where are our histories of the uncouth faux pas in 1930s Berlin theater? I can’t believe we invented pearl clutching. It can’t be our brains are soup compared to illiterate people w teeth and brain rotted with syphilis.
@jacobin “sitting there alone in vast dark theaters trying to come up with new adjectives to describe their own jaded disaffection.”
This alone: send the author to The Hague. You can’t say this while writing like this. Are the theaters dark? Are they vast? (!?!!?) jfc
@Jesse_Brenneman I will lose all left credibility I don’t have but I think we should be both deeply antagonistic to AI capitalism (and concerned w effects on our cognition) and deeply curious about AI as a tech that can radically move us closer to the fully automated communism ideal.
