About this book

This book describes the urgent need of modern humanity to renew and reinforce an open attitude to the complexity of life, above all by embracing its intrinsic indeterminacy, rather than attempting futilely to control its evolution. Oblivious to this ever-more urgent necessity, seduced by the speed and virality of digital pattern recognition, computing, and artificial simulation of human thought, society has reverted to a linear, deterministic concept of reality, under the belief that everything can be measured and managed, and that error and predictability will soon be eliminated from our lives and organizations. Consequently, choices and responsibilities have been delegated to technology, artificial intelligence and algorithms, even in educational institutions, which are now preoccupied with teaching mere skills and know-how, thus committing the fatal error of confusing artificial, mechanical, complicated systems with living, complex, adaptive systems. 
This volume is intended not only for complexity/social scientists, philosophers and students, but to the curious from all wakes of life. It calls for learning to inhabit complexity, while recognizing and participating in its interdependent, interconnected, interactive systems of relationships. Dominici reveals the futility of endeavoring to control the uncontrollable or observe the unobservable, showing how self-organization and emergence, triggered from the smallest and most modest elements, impacts the entire system.

📌 Una sfida epistemologica ed educativa che, per la sua radicalità e pervasività, non ha precedenti nell’evoluzione non-lineare dei sistemi sociali e dell’Umanità (Dominici 1995,2003 e sgg.).

Oggi tutti sembrano partire dai medesimi presupposti, in passato…basterebbe andarsi a rileggere articoli e pubblicazioni, scientifiche e divulgative (chiaramente, sia italiane che internazionali). “Verba volant…”.

"Torniamo, ancora una volta, all'errore degli errori* e, a tal proposito, non è inutile ribadire, con chiarezza e determinazione, un concetto articolato e fondamentale: non tutta la realtà fenomenica è spiegabile dal pensiero "causale" e lineare, non tutto è osservabile ("proprietà emergenti") e, di conseguenza, misurabile e prevedibile; pertanto, non tutto è descrivibile / rappresentabile dai linguaggi scientifici della certezza (produttori di riduzionismo e determinismo); non tutto (anzi!) è spiegabile da leggi scientifiche, semplici e universali, iscritte/presenti già nella Natura e nel mondo fenomenico; non tutto è semplificabile e/o riducibile magari sulla base di formule matematiche e algoritmie, soprattutto, non tutto è gestibile (anzi!), anche se le tecnologie delle connessione e la disponibilità infinita ed inesauribile di dati, ci stanno restituendo, in questa prospettiva, certezze e sicurezze estremamente rischiose, talvolta illusorie, anche relativamente all'atavica aspirazione/ambizione di controllare, esercitare un dominio sulla Natura stessa.

E lo abbiamo potuto verificare anche nel corso della recente emergenza globale e sistemica, in cui "tutto" è scaturito da un virus che, supportato/agevolato dalla disorganizzazione organizzata e scientifica degli Stati Nazione, ha messo in crisi l'intero sistema mondo iper-connesso e tecnologicamente iper-controllato/sorvegliato.

Al contrario, nell’illusione e nella prospettiva ingannevole di poter semplificare e facilitare tutto, di eliminare l’errore e l’imprevedibilità dalle nostre vite e dalle nostre esistenze, di poter gestire e indirizzare, perfino misurare la complessità/ipercomplessità, continuiamo a navigare intorno alla definizione di “soluzioni semplici a problemi complessi*", poco consapevoli, peraltro, di quanto la linea di confine tra cittadinanza e sudditanza sia estremamente sottile; una linea di confine che si è ancor di più assottigliata nella civiltà ipertecnologica e iperconnessa - fondata, lo ricordo, su logiche stringenti di controllo e sorveglianza, che ridimensionano sempre più gli spazi sociali dell’autonomia e della libertà/responsabilità” (citazione)
