This summer marked the grand opening of the Miracle Campus in Pucallpa—Peru’s first orthopaedic referral center dedicated to serving the Amazon region.
In a country of 34 million with only four licensed prosthetists, this facility addresses a critical gap in access to orthopaedic care, prosthetics, and rehabilitation. Designed to meet the clinical, operational, and human needs of a historically underserved population, the campus offers a dignified care model rooted in restoration and continuity.
This achievement reflects two decades of strategic vision, collaborative effort, and unwavering faith. It’s more than infrastructure—it’s a replicable model for delivering specialty care in low-resource settings. I couldn’t be more proud of our team at Scalpel At The Cross.

A 10 Year CWIS Anniversary
The @CWISociety turned 10 this year and eclipsed 800 surgeons worldwide. The @UMNOrthoSurg - @RegionsHospital Chest Wall Institute team brought home lots of Gold, two Keynote presentations, and a boatload of memories in its most competitive field to date. Our Research Directors Sandy Vang & Jeff Winter have guided a myriad of research projects and a tight knit culture to blow the top off this year, and my partner David Weatherby crushed his Ortho Hollywood Squares gameshow. Thank you Team!

A remarkable model powered by incredible people. Grateful to Dr. Juan David Lacouture & Dr. Camila Nieto for the introduction to their team, facilities, and vision. After witnessing a truly service-driven model, I knew we needed to foster further connection! More to come 💯
Orthopaedic Outward-Bound in Cartagena
It was awe-inspiring to take a tour of a striking new hospital on the coast of Colombia, whose mission is to serve an impoverished country-side even while delivering the highest-end orthopedic care for ‘surgical tourists’ in the pulsating cities of Cartagena, Barranquilla, and the coastal region of spectacular Colombia.
Dr. Juan David Lacouture (@jdlacouture), a true humanitarian and rising star in shoulder surgery & trauma, led the tour with his mentors, and my dear Bogotano friends Carlos Olarte Santos & Tatiana Almario AristizAbal (@talmario). His heart for ‘la gente’ and desire for exceptionalism in care to all peoples was literally biblical, and matched his pride for this phenomenal new orthopedic & trauma facility.
The Bogota Santa Fe Foundation (@FSFB_Salud) project to build and run Hospital @SerenadelMar revealed to me The Power of Benefaction. Carlos and Sonja Haime, prominent Cubo-Colombian business magnate-philanthropists who were inspired by their treatment at Hospital for Special Surgery (@HSpecialSurgery) in New York, had a heart for seeing-through the same level of care in their country. HSS’s on-going partnership with Hospital Serena del Mar manifests in an annual educational event with HSS in Cartagena, to amplify the level of care everywhere.
The hospital seems to lack nothing and is a sanctuary for healing even in life and death. It provides tremendous freedom to learn what’s possible even unto frontiers we do not yet know.

• A mountain biking accident left Erich with a severe scapula and chest wall injury.
• After 2 years of incomplete healing, he faced chronic pain and limited mobility.
• In 2023, he underwent an 8 hour reconstructive surgery.
• Dr. Cole and his team at the Scapula Institute realigned Erich’s collapsed ribs and reconstructed his shoulder blade using a bone graft.
• Recovery demanded a gritty PT process—one that Erich tackled head-on.
• Today, Erich is back to what he loves: strength training, rock climbing, and snowboarding.
• The surgery restored not only physical function, but also confidence and hope.

This @jbjs Case Connector in Vol. 16, No. 2, April-June 2026. is important to me for three reasons:
1.) It represents an all-too-common pathology which is unfortunate and avoidable, The Forequarter Lateral Implosion malunions.
2.) I co-authored this project with two dear visiting fellows from Latino America, Drs. Carlos Moreno-Castillo (@drmorenocast) & Alejandra Huaco Aranguri.
3.) I affectionately call these reconstructions, The Whipple surgeries of my Ortho Trauma practice!

Dr. Mark Kryskow has long stood at the intersection of precision and purpose, advancing chest wall and trauma surgery, building systems where none existed, and serving with a commitment that reaches far beyond the operating room. From the mountains to the ICU, his work has shaped trauma care, empowered communities, and restored quality of life to patients who needed it most.
As founder of the Regional Mountain Trauma System and Trauma Medical Director at Berkshire Health Systems, Dr. Kryskow has spent decades ensuring that the right care finds the right patient.
In partnership with et al., a digital presence has been built to grow alongside his mission. This platform will be amplifying the impact of his patients’ stories, extending reach for those in need, elevating education across clinical and alpine environments, and strengthening the bridge that connects the right surgeon to the right patient.

German’s story is one of patience. Almost 3 years ago, German sustained a proximal femur injury from a car that ran over his leg. He later underwent surgery at a local hospital. The surgery was unsuccessful and in January of 2024, he slipped and fell which worsened his state of being, setting him back tremendously.
By the time of the August 2024 Scalpel At The Cross surgical campaign, he was facing complications from failed implants and a nonunion of the femur. He was immediately scheduled for a revision surgery, which involved a complex femoral reconstruction with bone grafting. However, just as the Scalpel staff was preparing for surgery, an emergency case arrived at the hospital, causing German’s procedure to be postponed until the November 2024 campaign.
Without a word of complaint, German waiting 4 months and returned in November 2024 for surgery, showing deep gratitude with an unwavering smile on his face. Today, he's standing on both legs, with his children always by his side.

What we did in Vegas will not stay in Vegas!
20 Ortho & Gen Trauma Surgeons came together with an incredible faculty to learn next-level care for chest-wall-injured patients.
The 5-Labs facility across from The Palms is amongst the nicest labs I’ve hosted a course in—capacious, sunlit, well preserved bodies, well-stocked tables, and best staff ever.
Best Ever recognition also certainly goes to my Co-Chair Tom White and our faculty: David Weatherby, Mark Kryskow and Tommy Githens—incredible Ortho-Trauma hybrid teaching. I can tell you my own practice notches higher each time I log time with these guys. Thanks to the excellent & gracious @klsmartin Group for bringing it all to reality and setting the world aflame!
…..and oh by the way, The Sphere is nothing short of a mindblowing phenomenon!
The largest Gap in Surgery is between the standard of practice and the standard of care for rib fracture treatment and this crew is closing it!
