@DoesTheScience @SnarkDivine We just have the “DQE” - doctoral qualifying exam. It’s three parts: statistics, write a research design on the fly, and defending either a peer-reviewed article of your own (conf. or journal), a seminal journal paper, or a “10-page” (it was not) literature review of your own.

@DoesTheScience I ended up taking a semester of leave after. It wasn’t the qualifying exams per se, but the extreme burnout, partly from studying for them. My “10 page literature review” (16 when submitted) had to keep being expanded to 37 fucking pages to “fully answer the [4-part] question.”

@FromPhDtoLife Is this thread serious? STEM PhDs often require expensive reagents and access to instrumentation to pursue their projects - most research topics would be impossible if students operated independently with regards to funding. This is a terrible take.
