🚨India Approves 42 years Long-Stalled 930 MW Hydropower Project on Chenab. Massive Protests in Karachi.

The Indian government has approved the fast-tracking of the 930 MW Kirthai-II Hydropower Project on the Chenab River, ending a 42-year-long delay for one of the largest planned hydroelectric projects in the region. First proposed in 1984, the project had remained stalled through changing governments, regulatory hurdles, and bureaucratic delays. Now, it is finally moving toward construction.

The decision is significant not just because of the electricity it will generate, but because it comes amid India's broader push to fully utilize the waters of the Indus river system. In recent months, India has accelerated multiple projects on the Chenab, approved the Chenab-Beas river-linking initiative, and moved to enhance storage and water-management capabilities across key dams.

Kirthai-II is expected to become an important part of this larger Chenab basin network, joining projects such as Kiru, Kwar, Pakal Dul, Ratle, Baglihar, Salal, and Dulhasti. Together, these projects are gradually transforming the river into a major source of energy and strategic infrastructure for India.

As India pushes ahead, the developments are being watched closely across the border.

In Pakistan's largest city, Karachi, thousands of residents have recently taken to the streets to protest worsening water shortages. Demonstrators blocked roads and accused authorities of failing to address a crisis that has forced many families to rely on costly private water tankers for months. Rising living costs, unreliable supplies, and concerns about water quality have further intensified public anger.

While Pakistan continues to raise concerns on international platforms, India has maintained that issues related to the Indus river system remain a bilateral matter and that it will continue to pursue projects permitted within its territory.

For India, the approval of Kirthai-II represents the revival of a long-forgotten infrastructure project. For Pakistan, it comes at a time when water security is becoming an increasingly sensitive domestic issue.

After 42 years of delays, the Chenab's 930 MW Kirthai-II project is no longer a proposal—it is becoming reality.
