Did you know that James Webb Space Telescope runs on RAD750?
It's a $200,000 radiation-hardened single-board computer based on PowerPC 750 running at 118 MHz, first released over 20 years ago in 2001.
For comparison, a $35 Raspberry Pi 4 released in 2019 is around 35x faster.
@TunedM52 The best PPCs at the time Apple went to Intel was Freescale's MPC8461D, a dual core, 1.8 GHz with embedded DDR controllers at similar TDP. And PA Semi's PA6T a dual core, 74-bit, 2 GHz part at 35 W wasn't far off. Both with AltiVec.
I remember we shipped the G5 XServe before the Power Mac G5.
There were a bunch of use cases we had to make sure worked ok as marketing felt people would still buy these and use them as desktop systems since the Power Mac wasn’t yet available.
Some of my wishes for 2022 are harder to come by than others.
I actually believe that if @RaptorCompSys and @greenhost virtually sat down together in a meeting, it wouldn't be too hard to leave the "table" with new service that the Free world needs: VPSs running on Open Hardware
