Reduced smoking = fewer cancer deaths. From 1970–2022, reductions in smoking accounted for 51.4% of of the drop in overall lung cancer mortality. Declines in cancer deaths were greater in men (60.1%) than in women (42.7%).

Averted lung cancer deaths due to reductions in cigarette smoking in the United States, 1970–2022

This study analyzes U.S. 🇺🇸 #LungCancer 🫁 mortality trends from 1970–2022, highlighting the impact of tobacco control on reducing deaths. Using national mortality data, the authors estimated the number of lung cancer deaths and person-years of life saved compared to expected rates had smoking prevalence not declined. They found that 3.86 million lung cancer deaths were averted (2.25 million in men, 1.61 million in women), corresponding to 76.3 million person-years of life gained—an average of 19.8 years per averted death. The reductions in lung cancer deaths accounted for over half (51.4%) of the overall decline in cancer mortality, with a greater impact in men than women and in the White population compared to the Black population.

These findings underscore the profound role of tobacco control in preventing premature deaths and extending life expectancy in the U.S.
