These encodings were "lossy" of course, but useful. Given LLMs' extraordinary resource cost (water, energy, etc), we need better lossy encodings of the natural world. So I say again, look to how Indigenous folkx do it! (4/4)
Indigenous folks for millennia designed and validated systems, stories, traditions, and songs that map the natural 3D world in interpretable, teachable, even personal ways.
If LLMs hope to overcome this next hurdle, ask us (Indigenous) how we did it first. 🧵
Fei-Fei Li (@drfeifei) on limitations of LLMs.
"There's no language out there in nature. You don't go out in nature and there's words written in the sky for you.. There is a 3D world that follows laws of physics."
Language is purely generated signal.
Stories and even the structure of our society encoded aspects of the natural world in ways that were transmittable and also entertaining! Hula, and chants, are some of the highest forms of this idea. (3/4)
Tackling ♻️E-Waste with 💧DissolvPCB
E-waste is a global crisis. But for many engineers and designers, it can feel out of reach. We create electronics every day, yet the end-of-life impact often goes unaddressed.
Our new #UIST2025 paper takes a step toward changing that. DissolvPCB is a fabrication method for fully recyclable printed circuit boards that can be produced with any off-the-shelf FDM 3D printer. It uses PVA as the substrate and EGaIn as the conductor material.
🪦 At the end of its life, the PCB simply goes into water. The PVA dissolves, the EGaIn gathers into a reusable liquid metal bead, and components are fully recovered. These materials can then be reused to fabricate another PCB, closing the loop.
🛠 DissolvPCB works with through-hole and surface-mount components, supports single- and double-sided boards, and can be extended to 3D form factors or even 4D printing.
💻 We have also released an open-source KiCAD-based EDA tool to make adoption easy. Software: https://t.co/ROvAyoSMoc

🤔 What if every PCB we designed could have a second life?
The Internet of Matter (IoM) lab at Notre Dame CSE (https://t.co/HkSv771pQ0) is hiring one postdoctoral researcher or visiting scholars with a background in printed electronics and embedded systems. The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience with fabrication, such as printed electronics, PCB design, textile (knitting, weaving) and some level of machine learning.

Taking battery-free computing to new heights ✈️
Although UAVs have many functions, their reliance on batteries also causes many limitations, including shorter and more expensive flights, as well as detrimental environmental effects. Research from GT's schools of Interactive Computing (@ICatGT) and Computer Science (@gatech_scs) showcases how UAVs can become more widespread: solar power. ☀️

Jason taught the first embedded computing systems class I ever took 15+ years ago. I'm now a tenured prof at Georgia Tech– time flies!
But also he looks exactly the same and the dad jokes are still strong.
Grateful to @ProfJosiah for an incredible I-SENSE Seminar!
Also a full-circle moment—15+ years of collaboration with I-SENSE Executive Director Jason Hallstrom!
Honored to host White House PECASE awardee @ProfJosiah for a deep dive into embedded systems for good.

🌺 Bridging Tradition & Technology in Hawai‘i’s Classrooms 🌺
Hawai‘i’s Kaiapuni schools face unique challenges in integrating computer science education—from teacher shortages to Western-centric learning tools that overlook cultural relevance.
Dr. Josiah Hester (@ProfJosiah) and his team at the @GeorgiaTech Ka Moamoa Lab located in Tech Square's TSRB building are working to change that. Their research is creating culturally responsive tech solutions that empower teachers and keep students connected to their heritage—while preparing them for the future of AI and computing.

All Elon is doing is torching the infrastructure that makes america the world leader in biomedial research. And he's not doing the economy any favors either, the negative effects of this are going to reverberate through biotech, pharma and the rest of the economy 5/N
Batteries? We don’t need no stinkin’ batteries. At @GeorgiaTech, researchers are working on smart devices that take power from their environment.
Assoc. Professor Josiah Hester (@ProfJosiah), faculty in @ICatGT, has received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for his work on these battery-free embedded systems.
The applications are fascinating: self-powered sensors to monitor crops, or wildlife, or power grids. Wearable medical sensor networks powered by the patient’s own body. Simply reducing the number of batteries we use and discard would be an environmental boon.
