Yesterday, we published a report about struggling readers at secondary school.
Reading is a fundamental life skill. But only 10% of disadvantaged pupils who leave primary with poor reading skills get a pass at GCSE English and maths. 🧵👇 (1/7)

It turns out that we learn more if we hear things in a story.
This insight is very helpful for us as we develop the curriculum.
If we want our pupils to know more, remember more and be able to do more in every subject, then let’s find a great text!
Anyone fancy an early copy of ‘Ready to Teach: A Christmas Carol’? Give this a RT and someone will be chosen at random on Thursday! Merry Christmas, everyone! 🎅🏼 #shamelessplug@teachals @JohnCattEd
@MissJLud @maternityCPD I was an AHT on 0.8 for two years and loved my day off with my youngest. I loved doing the school run and I loved the creative headspace. Work were happy because I worked at full speed and long hours the days I was in and I was cheaper for them too
@SNCollins@teacherspeck In my experience belonging is the most powerful driver of behaviour. Weigh strategies to manage behaviour against creating a sense of belonging. Often they do the opposite. Those that do will help build learning relationships if other 3 are planned for too.
@lindsayjskinner really interesting topic:returning from mat leave was one of the toughest experiences in my career. Being inducted back into work life has to be absolutely on point and bespoke to each returning parent
@TeacherBusy I would have said the same until today! I’ve been covered in bright pink ink all day - with unknowing so lodges of the stuff all over my face. It took hours until somebody told me 🤦♀️
3) On the board is a very simple powerpoint slide. Every lesson is exactly the same layout and structure: a question about what we read, lang analysis and two literacy questions.
@RogersHistory I don’t think this should be a concept.
We should be encouraging teachers to switch off when at home: ensuring that policies & paperwork aren’t so constant and demanding that this can’t happen.We have a duty of care to put well-being first & that means-helping staff switch off!
So: tomorrow I teach *that* part in Of Mice and bloody Men where Curley's Wife calls Crooks the N-word multiple times and threatens to string him up...
Having spent over 13 years working in category 3 and 4 schools in deprived areas, and now teaching in a school judged as outstanding in a more affluent area, I thought I’d share my thoughts on the differences that I have seen…
@MissSDoherty What’s more of a shame is that this is the third post on social media I’ve seen today where the author has felt that they need to write a ‘don’t jump on me’ disclosure.
