@DT1125@big_pedestrian A mortgage has absolutely no relation to property taxes at all. Why should the amount and term of paying property tax have anything at all to do with the method you use to pay for the home. What if you use cash, or leverage something else besides the property to pay?
@_femmexfatale_ @Ron_Cod The "over oil" analysis was incorrect, but the shale revolution hadn't happened yet in 2003 so the US didn't know just how much oil it actually had.
@Tranz_Ferdinand It is a problem that they can coast in many of these courses with that mindset, not take the course seriously, and still easily pass. This just isn't the case in most STEM courses. I say this as a former philosophy major. The floor of expectations is just lower for students.
@TommyApples80@nikicaga IT is historically the easiest professional to do this, it is not a generalizable example. You don't need to learn much in school for "IT" and anything you would learn is basically outdated except maybe networking fundamentals. This is not true for any actual engineering degree.
@JeremiahDJohns People tend to like to working for and doing businesses with companies that are not as optimally run as they could be. Subjectively, I think PE firms tend to kill some "feel good" slack that extends to employees/consumers. So while they may be more profitable, sentiment declines.
@zippkode@JeremiahDJohns A claim like that is itself a philosophical claim though about the limits of knowledge. It's not really a dismissal of philosophy, it's just taking a position.
@scribeofcamelot@DeanLearner@inerati I'm not saying anything is "okay". It's just business . Theyre hiring fewer of everyone, *including H1Bs*, than in prev years, bc headcount is still juiced from covid. Theyre also laying people off *including H1Bs*. Still, their headcount is very high.
@scribeofcamelot@DeanLearner@inerati I didn't ignore it, it was a non sequitur so I didn't think it was relevant. This H1B number is way lower than in previous years too. But theyre still hiring H1Bs and theyre still hiring non H1Bs. The same as every megacorp that ever has layoffs-- rarely is there a hiring freeze.
@scribeofcamelot@DeanLearner@inerati Yes it is, they literally doubled headcount from 2019 through 2022, it was insane. Even with the recent layoffs they hired so many during covid that they are still far ahead of trend in headcount. They prob should layoff more tbh.
@johnarnold@profgalloway What is contemporary art doing in this list. What. No correlation with the rest. Novelty seeking in art is quite a bit more established and not even short term behavior compared to the rest.
@colin_fraser Well, people do have a lot of trouble identifying this in practice even if they understand it abstractly. Else people would be less likely to get conned, believe false information, etc.
@MariGO2thepolls It's been simmering in tech/IT worker discourse spaces for a long while. Just people totally randomly bringing up H1Bs when it has no casual relationship to whatever they are complaining about. That or offshoring to India.
@surlygopher@Empty_America Well they paid taxes, and will be paying your children to perform these services and basically transferring all their wealth to your children instead of their own as a result.
