@McLNeuro Hi, we're a beamline at the @advlightsource user facility @BerkeleyLab, we shoot X-rays at materials to learn about their surface chemistry. We look at catalysts, aerosol stuff, desalination membranes and whatever the users bring us.

@TrumanLab @breakliquid @Bi0lilla I've seen PIs swapped out. It can happen for many reasons. PI leaves institution but research facilities are local, PI retires or is found guilty of misconduct. NIH, NSF, DOE all have a procedure for changing the PI.

@feliciafis @DrTaraB20 @AcademicChatter Why would you say it's hypocritical? Maybe in a field setting there is not much choice in accommodation, but for a conference in cities there often is a choice. Two different situations allow you to make different decisions.

@paigeinabook94 @DanykaKByrnes I definitely did not learn this in high school. There are also plenty of colleagues (of various age groups!) who refuse to learn about citation managers. 🤯(I know!)
Using inconsistent styles is a problem of course, but should be easy to teach, no?

@epollaert @drstarbird @AileenIlianaPhD The point that I can agree with you on is that compensation for early career scholars outside of STEM is not adequate, and the last handful of years show that a thriving society needs all fields, not just doctors and engineers. So we should enable that!

@epollaert @drstarbird @AileenIlianaPhD How do you come to the conclusion that it's not a job? Grad students realistically put in at least 40 hours of work a week, and they contribute substantially to the output of their employer, whether you look at teaching or research.

@Selachophile @CharmaineSChua I can think of two things that may play a role: postdocs are more likely to need more space because they have kids, and they might be attempting to live without roommates (extravagant, I know). In a survey, 61% of postdocs said they spend >30% of their salary on rent.

@cathleencrudden I met that guy too! He he burnt a few $100K in daddy's company, then took a year off to read physics books at his vacation home, thus came up with that grand idea that got him the Nobel. Plus all that 'when you join my lab it's boot camp' crap.

@yddraigarian @TheStrugglingS4 @OpenAcademics @AcademicChatter they perform similarly, but EndNote costs money (or used to - does it still?), and the other two are free. Helps when you are a student switching institutions, and you can take your paper library with you.
