One of my absolute favorite classes to teach: Porter on standardized time.
So: before modern clocks, we often kept *diurnal time*. Like: there are 24 hours in the day. 6 AM = sunrise, 6 PM = sunset. This is a completely different way of keeping time.
🧵:
@LuigiCPA@Nextransit@SafeStreetRebel@LukeBornheimer Masonic has 3 southbound lanes across the panhandle: 2 cars, 1 Muni.
Your very specific cross route for GGP peaked @ 150 cars/hr pre-pandemic, or ~3% of the 4,700 cars of Crossover/Stanyan. The median time to cross that route was 6min vs 8min today. 97% of trips were unaffected.
@LuigiCPA@Nextransit@SafeStreetRebel@LukeBornheimer I’m confused, JFK is east-west. 19th Ave has marginally more traffic but bypasses JFK. Stanyan barely intersects with JFK & traffic levels are flat. Masonic has less traffic today than before. It seems like your beef is perhaps with Golden Gate Park’s existence?
This whole thread is great, but this forest-from-a-roundabout really stuck with me.
Everyone loves to talk about the strides Paris has made with cycling, but the massive investment in greening the city deserves equal credit for why these changes have been so popular.
@FitzTheReporter Wow, KQED won’t be the same without you. Enjoy this break from the frenzy— don’t keep your important words from us for too long though. San Francisco is a better place because of what you bring to all of us.
@cyrusphall@TransitEquitySF Almost quit my day job to try and get a night train going. IMO night trains from 4th & King to Tahoe and LA are both 🔥 Vegas is a stretch but could potentially be done on existing rails at ~ 13hrs (eg board 8pm Friday, in Vegas Saturday by 9am.)
@brezina@ericnakagawa Disagree. Siri has LOTS of issues but the brand has lots of value. If it gets good, everyone will quickly forget the prior. See also Apple Maps.
@terronk@sfstandard@jonsteinberg31 I agree that S.F. still has a progressive soul, but I think the propositions that are quite clearly conservative—to the tune of Florida or Phoenix—were kinda skipped over here. We shouldn’t be defined solely by those outcomes, but they certainly paint a changing social picture.
@brezina@devahaz Macy’s (& most chain retail) sales have been declining for years tho, while downtown rents have been soaring. The numbers don’t pencil out for most biz. Crime has a role, esp perception, but if “legalized crime” alone is the issue, why are many local biz thriving?
@DaveDologite@markasaurus Pretty buildings do not have to be expensive. I guess “bespoke” probably does but even places like this in suburban Paris (Clamart), that came in slightly below the price of the prior proposal, are not “bespoke” in the sense I think you’re trying to use it, but are quite lovely.
@Kazanjy@brezina This was a big part of my mayoral platform…in 2015. I read the tea leaves & knew this would become an issue. (I obviously didn’t predict the pandemic...) Scratch the surface even a decade ago and it was starting to crack…but it can (and should) be an incredible part of town.
@Scott_Wiener If you want to support local biz, it’s time to stand up to these forces.
Stronger vacancy controls
City owned retail space
Zone for ground floor commercial everywhere
Right-price externalized costs of delivery street use
Cap % cuts from delivery apps—or ban the practice
@Scott_Wiener Scott, process plays a role, but it’s cost that makes local biz unsustainable. The free market of landlords charging whatever they want, Amazon mooching off of our streets at minimal cost while externalizing low $ warehouses outside SF, delivery apps taking exorbitant cuts…
