For more than three decades, Eulalie Nibizi has dedicated her life to the pursuit of justice and human rights in Burundi, carrying not only her own hopes for a better future, but also the stories, pain, and aspirations of countless others who have looked to her for support.
As a woman human rights defender and Executive Coordinator of the Coordinator of the Burundian Coalition for Human Rights Defenders (CBDDH), she has spent the last 11 years promoting and protecting the work of human rights defenders in Burundi while documenting violations and advocating for accountability.

But behind the advocacy, reports, meetings, and trainings is a human being carrying the weight of countless stories and expectations. In this candid conversation, Eulalie opens up about the often-unseen cost of human rights work. She speaks honestly about moments of discouragement, burnout, exhaustion, and the threats that have not only affected her personally but also placed her family's safety at risk.

"There were moments it seemed as though we were fighting for a lost cause," she reflects.

For years, Eulalie carried the responsibility of trying to respond to every human rights defender in need. Over time, she came to a difficult realisation: she could not save everyone. The slow pace of change, the setbacks, and the persistence of violations often left her questioning whether the sacrifices were worth it. Yet even in her lowest moments, one thing remained stronger than despair: her conviction. A conviction that every human rights defender deserves protection. A conviction that documenting abuses matters. A conviction that silence is never an option.

As Eulalie reminds us, despair has never served any cause.
