@lpachter I think there’s a bigger reason for this since most genomics and bioinformatics tools until recently have not been mainstream. The rise of ML / empirical methods have made the community to start taking computational methods seriously.
@sama Umm takes time to build tech for hard problems… I was 25 when I started my PhD. Took some time to build stuff that would make a difference… also life kinda got in the way too
@patrick_diep However, the biggest issue imo is the reluctance of both private and public institutions to invest in the development of software pipelines and tools that would save 100’s of millions of dollars worth of productivity in the biotech space.
@patrick_diep Additionally I’ve realized that it takes significant effort to develop usable GUI’s. The nature of web development means that these GUI’s need to be constantly being upgraded (2 year cadence) to ensure that dependencies and frameworks don’t get depreciated.
@patrick_diep I think the biggest issue in this space is not establishing the baseline requirement for what bioinformatics tools should should requires. I’ve spent nearly a month on building out the dev infrastructure for my PhD research projects and it’s always ongoing process.
@njoybetz Additionally, universities need to adopt co-op programs so that the international students can work in the industry rather than burning through their training periods.
@ATinyGreenCell Just declare them in a straightforward way that “authors xxx and yyy engage in the commercial sale of products derived from the works presented here”. “All the work presented here is available under Creative Commons and MIT”. You’ll need to have Creative Commons for the hardware.

@dr_alphalyrae There was a point when I was talking with @TimothyStiles about what the “biologist’s git commit” needs to look like. We were thinking something like this to enable complete async collaborations between software developers and biologists.

@ATinyGreenCell Even in the history of semiconductors, a lot of these innovations happened because there was a demand for electronics for the telephone. We either spend the next 50 years looking for the synbio telephone (what vc’s do) or we upend the business models.
